Question How likely is something to break over $2100 before 75k?

I'm thinking about selling back my extended warranty, needing some advice.
I've got a 2007 FX2 5.4 Supercrew.

The warranty covers most everything except normal maintenance items until 72 months or 75,000 miles. I've got 3 years and 45,000 miles left on that.

I'm a tech, so parts are the only cost to me. They'll give me $2100 bucks for the warranty, so is anything likely to break that would cost over $2100 bucks in parts before I hit 75k? Only things I could think of would be engine and trans, and I've heard these are reliable.

Thoughts?

I would say biggest risk is tranny, but that typically happens with abuse or excessive towing (often improper), too large of tires and not correcting with gears etc. Being that you have a 2wd I would say the offroading abuse and tires are not going to be factor. If properly maintained you should be good. Some of the bigger problems with the motor were with with but are not limited to the older models such as they hydro lock on the 05's due to injectors sticking open, once again you probably do not have to worry about this. The other big one is the cam phasers, but they do not cost 2100 if you can fix them yourself, unless they lead to other damage.

With proper maintenance you should be good to go. However if your luck is anything like mine, the day you get rid of the warranty something bad will happen. I dont want to say either way for sure - but MORE THAN LIKELY you should be safe past the warranty mileage.

On my old 2005 FX4 I had 1 driveshaft, 2 4x4 solenoids and 2 window regulators break between 45k-55k miles and my extended warranty saved my butt.. The driveshaft alone was $1200.

Lets not forget about the vibrations when turning a corner from the worn packs in the rear end. I cant remember what they are called. Anyway that a $1200.00 dealer repair.

Edit: The clutch packs in the rear end.

so the cam phaser problem is not just 04-05's?

The probability jumps 10 times the instant you sell back that warranty.

Haha i saw his thread, thats so crappy.
I dont offroad, very occasional towing. Window regulators are under 200 bucks for the parts. Drive shafts i can get under 500 bucks for sure. What else ya got?

The trans on my old 05 went out, and I didn't tow much at all. I hauled with the bed on occasion, but nothing insanely heavy. My tires with 285/75.

That transmission job ran me around $2200.

I have 111,700 miles on my 05 and have replaced the front rotors and one window regulator.

How many miles did you have when your tranny quit?

My '07 got a new engine at 30,000 miles, due to excessive crank endplay-which was a known production error, but covered under warranty.

Trans is the next weak link.

Considering you have the 5.4, I'd keep the warranty. With known issues on the injectors and the cam phasers/adjusters you'd be nutz to get out of warranty for a few bucks... unless you're in a bind and need the money.

Call my truck the "666" of all trucks but everything listed above has been replaced in my truck (except tranny) and my extended warranty saved my ****. Thousands of dollars in repairs and all I paid was a few hundred bucks (deductible). Mine is an 05 with 76k (just went over my warranty)

I'd get out of the warranty. Think about it this way, are you willing to risk sacrificing $500-900 for a guaranteed $2100 today?

If you incur $1700 in repairs, you come out $400 ahead, but if you incur $2700, you'd be in the hole $600. can you risk that? I most certainly would.
