you might try adjusting the carrier bearing just a little. it seems to have worked for me 2 days no clunk

i was under the truck the orther day thinking about greaseing the slip yoke when i noticed drive shaft at the carrier bearing seemed bowed out to the pass side. so i just loosen the bearing bracket bolts slid over just a tad 1/4" or so. anyway it has worked for me for now anyway. just wanted to share good luck.

Put me down for another clunk - bump - slip yoke issue. I was 1st told it was because my front hub bearing was bad, so i just replaced all four rotors and pads..(needed brakes anyway) yet still had the bump feeling when i would come to a stop, and again when i took off. After reading on the web about this issue i pulled my drive shaft last night and used the special ford yolk grease. My truck drives like new again.. MAN HOW NICE!!

I'm getting ready to try some DuPont Teflon High Temp grease, but I have a question that is probably easy for most of you.

When I removed the drive shaft, a small amount of oil leaked from the transfer case. Is this normal or is the seal bad. Plus there was some of the oil in the slip yoke.

Last, do you grease the slip yoke that goes into the transfer case or does the transfer case oil keep it lubricated?

Thanks.

The small amount of fluid that leaks out is normal. The way I found that works best is clean out the slip yoke really good with brake cleaner and apply new grease. I've always used hi-temp bearing grease and it lasted about a year.

My 2001 supercrew did this and I finally replaced the slip yoke and clunk was permanently fixed. I'm pretty sure if you're getting the clunk new grease just mask the problem. I don't know how but the yoke splines wear out.

In reference to the grease you are talking about, are you applying that only to the slip yoke causing the bump sound, or are you also applying it to the splines of the yoke that go into the transfer case?

My confusion is about the splines of the yoke that go into the transfer case. Does the oil in the transfer case keep those lubricated, or do I need to put grease on those, too?

Thanks.

Apply the grease to the slip yoke on the DS. Trans fluid will get in there but it isn't what lubricates it. After you clean the slip yoke out with brake cleaner the grease sticks and applies really well.

Has anyone run into a problem of after reinstallation of the drive shaft you get a vibration over 60mph? I am wondering if I accidentally turned it 90 degrees or so? I marked with white out but the incredible amount of pb blaster I had to use to get the bolts out wiped it away...I "thought" I saw the mark but now am second guessing. Any thoughts at all would be appreciated - I had no problems before I took the drive shaft down. Didn't drop it or anything - really careful the whole time I had it down.

I use the steel two piece version with the upgraded 1350 Spicer XL u-joints. No vibration, no clunk. It has a grease nipple for the center connection splines. I use the same Ford grease (the blue stuff).

Just an update - I did drop the driveshaft again and flipped it 180 degrees. The vibration is gone, but I still hear the deep bass sound, so I am wondering if it might still be off a little bit. I matched it up with the same design the rust has worn on the differential flange, but just flipped it 180 degrees. Has anyone ever turned it 90 degrees to get the humming to stop? Or will this throw it way off?

Help -

On my 2010 F-150, 8-cyliner I had the dealer lube the slip yoke at 36K and the problem reoccured about 20K miles later,

Today a about 100K miles, heard a major clunk/bang and the transmission seemed like it was in natural and there was no throttle. After stopping, tried different gears, with no luck. Then turn the ignition off, waited, and restarted with our a problem. Drove another 250 miles without a problem (other than the ignoring clunk)

Thoughts ?

Could the "clunk" and the lack of throttle be connected?

Is the a dealer resolved issue?

What's the best way to diagnosis the problem?

Help - newbe to the forum
