So my trans failed, probably a result of a fan clutch failure while plowing last winter. But it could be from a number of other factors. Miles, custom tunes, taller tires, hauling heavy loads, etc... Personally, I don't care why.

I opted to share my experience because I'm still proud to be a Ford Truck owner. My Ford's have NEVER let me down (I've own many over the past few decades). They get the job done. And while this will cost me a nice pile of cash, my truck got me home. Plain and simple.

That to me is still Ford Tough.

Your 7.5 ' plow is too big for a 1/2 ton........You might want to downsize a bit????

Yeah for sure. I love Ford. I was just light-heartedly saying that i didn't think that was a ford tough moment. Ford has the best built trucks out there. The other two are beginning to take strides to catch up with Ford. I like to think that the other brands use ford trucks as a goal for there trucks. Weather thats true or not, i know ford makes a great truck. Glad it got ya home

I say kudos to the OP. He could have started a thread just to say Ford sucks and to whine about how they build crappy trannies. Instead, he still loves his F150 and just accepts the fact that sometimes things break.

Well, got the truck back Thursday night. Sure is nice to have my truck back. The new (reman'd) transmission works fine. Has more gear whine in first then the original, but it's got a 3yr/36K warranty, so if something happens. It should be addressed.

Ready for another 100K miles!!!!

How much $$$ did it end up costing you? And I agree as far as lovin' ford pickups. Just turned 180,000 miles and the only issue I've ever had (knock on wood) was a hole that rubbed in an aluminum a/c line at 20,000 miles due to poor placement of the line under the hood. I don't plan on ever getting rid of my 150, best truck I've ever owned!!

Congrats on the new tranny! Glad you're up and running!

What gets me is how many people are shaking scared about their transmissions just about hearing about a few failures on a 'doom and gloom' message board when there are hundreds of thousands of these 04-08 trucks on the road that have not had one iota of a transmission issue.

Out the door was a little over 2900. Painful, but cheaper then a new truck, that's for sure.

That doom and gloom seems to run rampant everywhere. Guys I work with were saying, oh crap, I sure hope my transmission doesn't fail and they don't even drive a Ford truck...

What about the tranny in the 4.6? i have an edge tuner on mine, pull a trailer quite often, oversized tires aand wheels, and 130k miles. Mine feels solid as it gets. What do you think? had it serviced at 100k.

edit: just read my post and realized how dumb it was. I was trying to say, my truck has lived a pretty normal life for being what it is. Worked hard, not abused but its treated like a truck. Are there any significant differences between the 5.4 and 4.6 trannys? Anything that can be done to avoid wear and tear other then the obvious driving habits?

7.5' is the normal plow size for a 1/2 ton. Most likely on his truck its a lightweight plastic/lexan plow since thats mostly whats offered for these trucks.
