What to look for...?

Have an '06 Lariat - runs great. For a long time now I have had a very high pitched squeaking that is coming somewhere from the rear. Very noticeable/annoying when I have the rear slider open. Mostly noticed when going slowly and windows open. If windows are shut or moving fast I do not really notice it. What should I be looking for as the culprit? Do wheel bearings ever squeak? I have very limited mechanical knowledge and do not want to be had by the dealership. I have an ESP that runs out in 2 years.

It could be many things but here's what I'd check first. After driving it several miles, preferably over 10 miles, put your hand on the rear wheels at the center most of the wheel. It should be warm but not hot. Be careful as it may be blistering hot. If it's hot, the parking brake is probably not releasing which is a common problem with these trucks. You'll need to disassemble the rear brakes and most likely need a new rotor and brake pad(s). It could also be a bad universal bearing, String or wire wrapped around the drive shaft, etc.

I'd check the easiest thing first, the tailgate. The tailgates are prone to squeaking

If the ebrake is sticking you'll feel the heat anywhere near the wheel, don't touch it.

If it is the Tailgate, how can I determine that? Could I hit it with some WD40? Would that help if that is indeed the issue?

You should be able to just tap it or move it back and forth and hear the squeak. White lithium grease would be the best to put on the hinges. WD 40 will work for a little while.
