Random FailSafe mode

It's been a while since I have posted on this issue and I know there are some new faces around here.

Randomly, my truck will go into failsafe mode and leave no trouble codes for my Xcal to read. it will do it on the interstate at times, it will do it at stop lights... just randomly. And it's becoming an everyday thing.

I have replaced my fuel filter numerous times
Replaced the TPS
Replaced the throttle body
Cleaned the air filter and MAF
Cleaned the new TB ater a few thousand miles (for no reason).

Nothing has helped.

My truck is an 04 5.4 F150. Eaton supercharger. 59K miles

On a side note, I hit a deer two weeks ago. Messed up the front end a little. Gonna replace the bumper, grill, grill surround, upper bumper (painted area), and the passenger's headlight assembly including all the brackets behind the bumper. Hoping I can get it all fixed for under $700.

$9,000 and the truck is yours, I might add. :P

Did you get the pcm reflashed after you installed the new TPS? I heard you need an update or something.

What about the APPS?

Yeah I know - the images are broke, lol... but it's a good overview ...

Just a thought since you have eliminated just about everything else ...

Good luck

Mine did the same thing....mine has been fixed for ~5K miles with no issues....mine finally threw 3 codes regarding the Throttle position stuck closed. Ended up changing fuel filter, decarbing throttle body and replacing TPS sensor. I also had the PCM reflashed to new newest software after the install and then re-installed my Edge Evo. Everything has worked great since then.

Mine used to do it cruising around 30MPH or on a turn. When it did it on the freeway offramp...that was the last straw.

Sounds like its flooded when you start it back up as well....has something to do with the Throttle body. I would have the PCM updated and re-install your programmer when its done.

Keep in mind the OP's truck is blown - it's not a simple matter to simply update the PCM ... and he's already replaced TB & TPS, etc.

Failsafe is a result of a failed sanity cross-check of all the various ETC inputs, to ensure yer truck does not act like a Toyota. The APPS is the only component not contained within the TB assembly - it's on the pedal mechanism.

BTW - these trucks do not 'flood' except when an injector is leaking...

Hey Keith,

Longtime since I have seen you around. I had this issue on my truck, replaced the TPS nothing, then replaced the throttlebody assembly which includes a TPS and it fixed mine. Now talking to the tech at the Ford house he said that there are two known reasons that can cause this condition. 1st is that the coils are acting up and emmitting RF noise which disrupts the motor signal, the only way to test is to take to a ford house that can hook up an oscope to the coils to check there output and compare them but this only works for the factory coils(I dont remeber what ones you have). 2nd which is less common is that the alternator is emmiting RF noise causing the same disruption. Hope you can figure it out.

I haven't been on much lately. After these troubles and what not, I have lost a lot of interest in the truck.

Yep, $9,000 is all. Though when/if I get it all fixed up, I probably won't sell it. I have the whole front end off right now though, slowly looking for replacement parts to fix what the deer smashed up.

Jack,

I guess I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and take it in to a ford dealer to have everything looked at. A guy I worked with had mentioned the same thing you did saying that maybe the coils or alt may be sending signals that are confusing the PCM causing the issue.

Can a dealer reflash the PCM if its NOT in the truck?; IE I take it off and up to the dealer.

FailSafe mode? I can guess its your Throttle Body. Same thing with me, headed down to Orlando and was doing 85MPH and BAM! Failsafe mode kicked in, lost my power steering and everything...turned the truck off and back on and then failsafe popped up. Had my steering back now...replaced the whole throttle body, but it could also be the censor.
