Exclamation Rear Pinion Seal

First. Do your research learn what to do, lessen your chances of damaging your vehicle.

How to Replace Rear Pinion Seal.

1: Take off back tires. Take down Spare tire.Purpose is merely just for easy access.

2: Using a breaker bar loosen up the plug in fill hole. If you cant get this open STOP!! YOUR DONE. How would you fill it back up?

3:Using a 12mm 6pt socket. Take off the 4 bolt in the flange connecting drive shaft to diff.
Use a flathead screwdriver and dead-blow hammer pry off the flange that the bolts were in. DO NOT let shaft hit the ground. Use a wire coathanger and hang it from underneath the truck as high as possible.

4: Take off bolts on the diff cover. Pry off Cover, start at bottom. Have an oil pan for drainage.
Do not dent this cover. Let the oil drain out. This can drain while you do the next step. ohh yeah it stinks as well..

5:Using a ruler measure how much thread is exposed in front of the pinion nut.
Write it down..

5: Take the nut off.

7:Using a 3-jaw puller remove pinion gear. Careful it will come off pretty easy one you get it going. Rent from Autozone.

8: Using a torch or heat gun heat up the pinion seal, there is glue in the seat of the seal.
Don't overheat. It should come right off after warming up. Don't scratch the inside of Diff.

9: Using a LARGE socket to reseat the new seal tap evenly until securely seated. DONT BEND edges. You will have a leak eventually if you do.

10: Clean off Diff cover. Use soap and water for sludge. Use wire brush to remove old gasket material. Set it down let it dry.. Have a beer watch a little of the game.

11: Using Gasket maker spread it evenly around the edges, pretty thick. Evenly.
Put 2 of the bolts in the bolt holes to line it up before placing it on. This will help you line it up correctly without making a mess.
Tighten up evenly- 2 bolts at a time 2 at the top 2 at bottom side..Look up torque specs for your vehicle.
Let it sit and set-up-dry. Follow instructions on the back of tube to determine the time. Wipe off excess that squeezes out after you tighten around outside.

12:Set the parking brake. Put the pinion nut back on. use the measurement you took earlier to determine how far to tighten. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

13:By now your Diff cover seal should be dry.
Refill the Diff with the oil specified for your vehicle. Maybe traction additive??

14: Put drive shaft back on.. Torque to your cars settings

15: Tires back on...

Things you will need:

Torque settings pinion nut and flange bolts for drive shaft and diff cover

6pt metric sockets.
Flathead screwdriver
Dead-blow hammer
New Pinion seal
Gear Oil-fill until it spills out normally make sure it is what the book says
Heat gun-torch
