Using an exchange machine in the passive mode - with the engine running - is *NOT* a flush. It's simply using the tranny pump the SAME WAY it works when you are driving to move the fluid through the transmission, with the old fluid being replaced by new fluid.

If the shop wants to pump flushing fluid through the tranny, THAT'S what you don't want.

I agree with Arrubba.

By this time, there are lots of build-ups and internal line pressures have changed but the FLUSH will immediately return these back to almost original by removing the deposits. Now, this is when a most weak trans will start to fail....

The old saying is if you have not done regular service, "let the sleeping dog lay" and leave it alone.
I have had very good luck with automatic transmissions in the past and I believe it's because of preventive maintenance. I had an old Dodge truck that I put over 380K miles on; a Ford Explorer with 170K on it and others that I never had tranny problems with. An old transmision guy told me once that if you do a lot of pulling and drive it hard, change your fluid and filter every 25K. If you never pull and baby it all the time then 50K is probably fine. Always change fluid and filter when you change and follow the before mentioed rules and you will never have a problem. If I were you, I would listen to what the guy at the dealer told you and change your fluid at or about 50K.

Did you buy it used or have a leak and loose a lot of fluid? I've never heard of a transmission failing that early without something leading to its early demise. I took a car to AAMCO one time and had my fluid and filter changed. When they were done they brought the car around the front and told me it was ready to go. Jokingly, I said, "You did put fluid back in it right?" The guy looked at me with an "Oh s#&t!" look on his face and said, "No." I told him to push the car back into the garage and fill it up! You really have to check their work, unfortunately.
