this is actually funny, my shifter cap broke off yesterday. I was going to glue it on last night but on the way home I got into a wreck and totalled the truck, this is the least of my problems now!!!

My shifter cap came off and kept popping off. I finally used epoxy and forced in on there. It made a mold around the center plastic deal in the center of the shifter. Then I filled the epoxy mold with super glue and pressed it together. Over a year later and its holding up great.

New shifter cap available.

Sorry to revive such an old thread, but it is one of the threads I read with interest when the shifter cap on my Mark LT started peeling chrome. By now, everybody knows the shifter cap by itself is not available through Ford. They are happy to sell you the next higher assembly, though (the entire ****/handle). I said no!

I just received a new cap I ordered on eBay, and it looks great. Problem is, it won't fit my Mark LT. However, from some of the descriptions I've read here, I believe it is the right one for 2004-2008 F-150. Just search for "F-150 shifter cap" and it should pop up. Caution: There are at least 2 ways these caps mount. Mark LT's (and probably F-150's with leather wrapped shift *****) use 4-prongs in the center of the cap and an anti-rotation pin for mounting. This new replacement (the only one I've ever found) uses 2 clips on the outer circumference, plus an anti-rotation pin, similar to what I've read here. Be sure how your cap mounts, and compare it with the pictures before ordering.

I'm considering cutting the pins off my new cap, so i can cement it to the ****.

Two different mounting styles. The new one from eBay is on the left.

Two different mounting styles. My 2006 Mark LT is on the right.

I hope this helps somebody.

Mine started peeling years ago...it cut my finger so I pulled it off...then I tried to strip the chrome off of it...that didn't work out too good...I have since moved and lost it...

FWIW, that was the second one to peel. The chrome at the base of the shifter (around the letters and shifter started to peel also and the whole shifter was replaced under warranty).

Mine is like the one on the left in the picture...
