Whine from the Motor....bad alternator?

I have about 62k on my 04 F150 which has already seen a brand new rebuilt transmission about 3k ago and now it has a pretty loud whine (louder than my tru duals magnaflow exhaust setup) coming from the motor.....I was told to check the power steering but that's not it.

I just ended up replacing my alternator on the 05 Mustang with 31k for a similar sound.

It gets louder as I accelerate so I am not 100% if that's it but I do know using a flat screwdrive to it will tell me, just pretty hard with having the fan right there and the noise of the exhaust as well....sounds like its coming from the left of the alternator....any ideas?

My serpentine belt tensioner went out on me at about 58K miles and that's the sound it was making...like a bad bearing. It was very tough to figure out where it was coming from no matter where I tried to listen from. I figured since it was still under warranty, I'd just give it to the dealer, and they handled it.

A/C Compressor? My old Monte SS used to do that. Higher the rev's louder the whine. Sounded kinda like a super charger. LOL!

haha nope not supercharged and i thought it was the alternator but it seems to be coming from whatever is to the left of it even though with a long wrench I could swear the alternator is making a pretty funky thunk sound when its running...just like my 05 mustang with 32k was doing, thankfully that one was under warranty.

Not so lucky with my truck...new trans at 59k under warranty about a few months ago and now over 60k and 6 years later (had bought it used with an extended 7year on the powertrain I believe) but that doesn't cover the alternator.

It does the sound while accelerating only, if I'm cruising down the highway or at highway speeds it runs finds and no weird sounds, just during acceleration so I am not sure as to what it is 100%

I know where the belt tensioner is, just not sure if its that or something else. Noone thinks its the idler pulley? Does it when I started it, goes away and then starts up when I put pressure on the gas pedal and the rpms go up.

I may just get a video of it for all of you so you all can see....since I have a flip with pretty good sound

I'd suggest removing the belt, then spinning all of the pulleys by hand. If one is really bad you should be able to feel/hear it.

LOL. That's the only issue for me. I will never know when my alternator will go out, or any other pump or pulley for that matter.

Do I need a special tool? On the mustangs there's a nut that I just use a wrench or breaker bar on so I'm puzzled

Well I swapped the alternator and it was still doing it, played with the pulley connected to the tensioner and turns out it was that.

Replaced the tensioner pulley today and the whine is gone!

Hope this helps someone else
