Cruise control just quit working. (2004)

Today. The only thing out of the ordinary that I can think of is last night I accidentally put a non-chipped door key into the ignition. I don't know if that has anything at all to do with it.

Are there any diagnostic tricks, or relays to check, or whatever?

Thanks!

It should be fused. Check your owner's manual for which one.
If it was on the recall for burning cruse controlls it could be the fusable link they put on. And you may have avoided a fire.

Same thing happened to me on a 6 hr drive. Cut out about an hour into the drive and no matter what I did it wouldn't come back on. Then about an hour later it worked again when I hit 70 and has been working ever since.

I think I remember reading somewhere on this forum that the cruise control won't work if one of the brake lights is burned out. In addition to the suggestions above, check your brake lights to ensure they are all working.

Not sure if this helps but I'll throw it out. Mine stopped working on my 04 full time right after I bought it 3 months ago. It would work for the 1st 15-20 minutes after you start it and then quit. After playing around with it a little I found that when it worked if I hit any of the electric window buttons to go up or down, the cruise died. I would put it right back on and hit any window button and off it would go. I remember the previous owner saying he had all 4 of the window motors replaced but I couldn't fathom the correlation between windows and cruise. When I had the dealer replacing my plugs I asked him to check it out. After conferring with Ford Technical gurus they said there is a circuit board shared by the console shifter, windows, and the cruise. According to them the cruise is the final destination in this loop and when I hit the windows the board shuts the power to the cruise. That's their story and they offered to fix it for $520. I opted to pass that day and I'll try to find someone a little cheaper to replace to board, if indeed that is the problem. Oh, and I looked in my Owner Manual and I didn't see any fuse labeled cruise control. But it was dark and I had a couple of beers. Good luck.

A search/post in electrical will also work wonders.
