IWE actuator seal
IWE actuator seal
i have an 05 4x4 with a 4.6L. It started to rattle under load. The rattle would start on the drivers side but then it would come from both sides. I read it could be the front hub seals. I put a hand vacuum on the passenger side hub and it held so that i could turn the axle. When i attached it to the drivers side, i couldn't get it to hold any vacuum and i could hear air passing through the vent tube. All of the vacuum lines are fine. Do i need to replace the actuator or can i just replace the seal? Also should i replace both or will replacing the drivers side be enough?

Did a search for you really quick:

thanks for the info. I don't think its the check valves or the solenoid because the 4x4 system engages and disengages fine, and when it is engaged the rattle stops. How much is a new actuator?(approx.)
You'll have to replace the entire IWE, you can't get just the seal. It is a Ford only part, as is the solenoid. Shop around online and you can find individual IWEs for between $70-$80 including shipping. My local dealer matched online prices when I told them I wouldn't pay the $140 they were quoting me. If the other side is working OK you don't have to replace it at the same time unless you just want to.
The system is actually pretty clever and simple. Unfortunately it is also under-engineered regarding durability. At least the repairs are fairly easy to do for the average back yard mechanic.

I read that if i disconnect the vacuum lines at the hubs and plug them, the rattle should stop and the truck should be ok to drive. Is this true and are there any limits to how fast or how long you can drive like this? (golfing trip coming up soon)
