Just finished Mark VIII efan/sp2 install

I just came in from my efan install. I wanted to keep the factory shroud for maximum cooling, so I dremeled the e fan to fit into the factory shroud. It's bolted to the top of the factory shroud and zip tied to the bottom. Aside from the two stainless steel bolts on the shroud, it looks factory.

The wiring is not complete yet. I still need to splice into the compressor, but the fan came on at 194* and never went to high. Granted it was a cool night (78*), but I did a bit of stop and go driving with a/c blasting and the temp only hit 196*. The real test will be tomorrow.

The install was nothing too difficult, but tedious and mentally challenging in trying to shape the efan shroud to seat in the stock shroud.

Truck response was much crisper, and the factory computer and edge programmer both showed an increase in mpg by 2-3 mpg. That is with 20 minutes of city driving. Not the best indicator, but the mpg sure as hell wasn't the same as with fan clutch setup.

All in all, a good days work.

This is the original Mark VIII fan.

With a silver sharpie, mark about a 1 inch perimeter onto the efan shroud around the outside of the fan blades. The distance is approximate. If in doubt, mark a larger perimeter and trim back if needed.
When the marking meets the edge, bring the line straight up towards the ground.

Then cut with a dremel (wear long sleeves and safety glasses) The scrap pieces should look like this.

You're going to have to take out the stock shroud.

This is where you do some of the fittings on your own. I don't have the nut/bolt/washer sizes, but you will be able to get a good idea by the pictures.

Lay the truck shroud small side opening down, and lay the efan in the stock shroud to fit.
The efan ledge should be making contact with the truck shroud. Fit it to your liking and drill with a 3/8 bit in the spots on my pictures, but more important, so it catches the efan ledge and does not interfere with the fan blades.

Nuts/bolts/washers on top, zip ties on bottom.

Looks like I lost a lower zip tie. I'm going to have to fix that.

I'm not too happy with the sp2 location, but it works for now.

when I first set mine up, (i'm using a dc controls controller btw) i had it set to 194 and the fan ran ALL the time at operating temp. once i set it to 202, it only came on when needed. the stock thermostat opens at 202, so if you set the fan to 194, you're basically trying to cool the motor with just the fan as the thermostat will never open.

i'd like to see some pics of the fan shroud mod. i just bolted the mark viii fan to the stock locations with some brackets. no problems here.

I'll try to take some pics when I take out the fan for the permanent wiring. I'll bump up the temp as well, but I thought the thermostat opens at 195°. Luckily, the sp2 allows for 3.5 degree increments. I think I'll bump it to 197°. Maybe I should also check it it has a thermostat. I bought it used and I forgot to look into that.

I need to take it apart to do the final wiring on it. I'll snap the pics then.

abgarza, not to thread jack, but how did you mount your plate to your bull bar? I have one coming in today and had been thinking of the best way to do it.

If your taking pics, can you snap one of your plate setup?

It's on bracket built into the bar. The bar was a freebie from a friend, and I've lost contact so I don't know the brand. Sorry.
