window regulator questions.

so the only thing that bothers me about my truck is knowing one day i could be driving in the rain and have a window fall into the door. previous owner said he had the back driver side window regulator replaced under warranty, so im guessing its all 04-08s that do it right? not just the early 04-05's? are the new regulators from ford actually better and improved over the stock ones? if they are im probably going to have the driver side one replaced before it even has the chance to break. i see that the problem is the hollow pins that hold the window up that spin around, but the ford new one is actually a better design?

and any 4 windows could do it?

whats a typical dealer charge to replace one, and whats the new part cost?

My driver and passenger front windows failed shortly after I first got my truck about 3 years ago. Since replacing them I haven't had any problems though. You can do it yourself as well, you just have to take the door panel off. It's not a big deal and saves you quite a bit of money.

i work on cars plenty, but stuff in the door pannel scares me. i did the door lock actuators in the mustang and it was the most confusing thing ive ever had to do. ill probably end up doing it on my own i was about to go look at the write ups and see how involved it is. i just wanted to see what people have been charged for this so i can weigh my options.

I don't know that they have improved them any at all. It is a very poorly designed contraption. Too much stress is put on the cable and it snaps. I bought one at the dealer for about $170 and replaced it myself, when my drivers door regulator popped. The dealer charges about $400.

I would just carry some duct tape in the truck, and if one breaks, you push/pull it into place and tape around the edge to hold it there.

I have had both drivers, and passengers front doors done under warranty. My '00 Focus is the same way... Stupid stupid, stupid design on the window regulators... Sure wish there was an improved replacement... For both vehicles...

I bought mine from Tasca almost exactly a year ago for my front drivers side window, installed it myself, and it has worked perfectly since. Knock on wood.

so the ford replacement is the same as the stock? how come people are fixing theirs and they havent broken again. i bought a ford to drive the **** out of it, not to carry duct tape around with me. oh well. still love the truck.

I have had only one break, and fixed it about 2 years ago. Of course, it is the window that gets the most use, so I would expect it to be the one more prone to snapping.

I could tell no difference in the replacement and the one I took out.

if it happens, you can pull the door panel off and use a piece of 1x2 to hold the window shut.

It took a couple weeks for me to get my regulator (waiting on shipping, they sent the wrong part, etc) and its my daily driver. So I just cut a piece of wood to the right size that you can put it between the bottom of the door and the window and it stays shut.

Of course this means driving around with a dismantled door, but the handle still works if you use it with 2 hands.

... but if it happens in the middle of a rain storm you are probably still screwed.

I just bought one for my passenger door for less than $100 shipped. I think the drivers side was a little more for some reason. Was from a ford dealer in Nevada I believe. Might try to replace it this weekend. Window sounds like it has gravel in the track when it goes up and down.

Just because it's a flawed design doesn't mean you won't get life out of it. If my regulator broke tomorrow, I'd be getting about 5 years out of it. Yes, little things can be annoying, but that comes with owning any vehicle.

You know the more I hang out here and learn about what all is almost certainly going to go wrong with my truck over the next 5 years, the less I like it.

There is no excuse for so much bad engineering on these trucks, and also no reason to believe Ford will ever change their ways.

Sorry, I am a bit grumpy this week. I guess deep down I just hope somebody at Ford is reading these posts and taking them seriously.

thats what gets me. i love my truck and will still drive one, but explaining the window thing to my tundra friend is going to suck. if i ever was to do it. were alwyas at each others throats, and driving around with duct tape in anticipation of something breaking will be icing on the cake for him
