Fuel Light.......

Whats up guys, Me and the wife have had a ongoing argument about the fuel light. She thinks it means you "should" get gas, and thinks you can drive for hours with it on. My truck did not come with a manual, so does anybody know how many KMs you can go with the low fuel light on? I don't let it get under 1/4 myself, but ladies don't seem to get it ( not all but the majority)

Different models get different mileage so it would be difficult to determine how many KMs your truck will go.

What you need to determine is how many Liters your tank holds.
Then when the Fuel Light comes on, fill up.
Tank capacity minus Liters added = how many Liters were in the tank when the Fuel Light came on.

When you fill up reset your trip button.
When you fill up again, Trip KMs divided by Ltrs to fill tank = KM per Ltr.

KM per Ltr * Ltrs in tank when light came on (above) = KMs till you walk.

.......OR.......

Just rename the 'Fuel Light' the 'Spouse Fight Light' and call it a day.

I have multiple vehicles and had forgotten the size of my BMW tank.
(It's 16.4 gals) :o

I was running around this weekend when the Fuel Light on, when I finally filled up the pump read 16.1 gals.

My trip meter read 440 miles. 440 / 16.1 = 27.33 mpg

27.33 mpg * .3 gal (what was in the tank) = 8 more miles till I would walk.
I won't do that again.

Like others have said above....about 50 miles after the light goes on. Convert that to km and that will give an APPROXIMATION.

BUT....more important is that when you drive with that "little" amount of fuel in the tank, you cause the fule pump to run un-submerged when the fuel sloshes around in the tank. This causes it to run hot and fail prematurely. If you want to pay the shop to drop your tank when it DOES fail SOONER be my guess. Or you can wrestle a nearly full tank to the ground and do it yourself cuz it WILL fail just after you fill up and it is darn near impossible to siphon fuel out of these newer tanks (it can be done by inserting the siphon after the fuel filler hose just at the top of the tank).

Your choice....I fill up between 1/4 and 1/2 of a tank, depending on where I am and what I am doing.

I've heard that the light comes on at about 10% of your fuel remaining. Don't go driving like that long though, the fuel pump is cooled by the fuel itself, if it is pumping fuel and there is not enough fuel to cool it properly, you will shorten the life spand of a $350 piece of equipment.

when the light comes on you can hit reset and see for yourself if you have a lariat. mine comes on right at 50 miles to empty. i drove it till it had about 30 miles to empty and it still only took 24 gallons (30 gallon tank) so you can run forever on the light. watch the gauge too, your gauge wont be on e when the light comes on

The warning sounds when on mine and the light comes on when the lie-o-meter reaches 50 Miles to E.

I do know that once I got it down to about 6 Miles to E, that going around corners you could tell it was running out of gas - it sputtered and tried to cut off a couple times due to such little amount of gas being left in the tank the pick up was having a hard time getting to it.

I have driven my past 3 Ford trucks (90, 98, 08) and had themn each for over 130K miles. I almost never filled up until the low fuel light came on. I also never had to replace a fuel pump on any of those 3 trucks (or any other vehicle I've owned). While the fuel pump does need to be in fuel to keep cool, if you have 50miles left to drive when it comes on, the pump should still be in over 4 gallons of fuel, more than enough to keep it cool.

If she waits to see the low fuel light/chime to fill up, she will be just fine.

That's good to know for those of us without Lariats. Mine usually comes on with about 3-4 gallons left, actually less when you figure the gas in the filler pipe, so that sounds about right.
