Epic Fail: Overlay Removal!!

Wow, Patriot Decals makes one helluva 'n overlay!
My truck is undergoing a moderate facelift so today, I decided to replace my bright silver overlay with new black ones. I have chrome on my truck and a Roush grille so I thought it looked "different", but better than the blue oval. Although I liked it, I think darker ones would look better. Well, taking the dang old overlay off cleanly is nearly impossible!!

So rather than work with the emblem still on the truck, I removed the whole thing and lo and behold, I love the clean look up front! I've always liked the Ford emblem, it was a source of pride, especially with all the Tundras and Titans out there, but the clean grille looks great. I look at it as a free "mod"! Anyway, with all the heavy threads out there, I thought I'd post something a little lighter.

Now the oval on the tailgate...how the heck do I take it off? Can I put the new overlay over the old one? I guess I can go with billet ones, but any other thoughts on removal?

Weird. I just replaced my Patriot Silver Grey/chrome overlay with a black/chrome overlay. Used a hair dryer for about 30 seconds and the whole thing came off in one piece with no difficulty whatsoever. Did both - grille and tailgate.

how do you take the rear oval off? or the decal?

the oval is just on there with double sided tape. i just pulled on mine enough and finally got it off.

The rear oval will look funny removed since the gate is engraved for the oval emblem to sit inside of, and with three mounting holes. Something to consider before you remove it. Only way to get rid of the gate emblem is to have the gate shaved, and at that point you might as well lose the F150 badge too.

A 900 degree heat gun at 12"s away for 6 seconds will get any decal off.

I was talking specifically about the decal and not the oval itself... When I applied heat and tried to remove the decal, it would flake and tear before I could any of it off.
I had a strong feeling that a heat-gun would do the trick but that's one tool I don't have. BTW, how does the plastic, and for that matter, paint hold up to 900 degrees at 12" away?

Anyway as for the tailgate, I put the new overlay over the old one and called it a day. It looks pretty good for now. I think I will eventually go with a black billet oval.
