Not saying you shouldn't have bought it JM, but I bought the same truck NEW (XLT Super Cab, LOADED) in the middle of the '04 model year for $21k, so the list might have been $30K + but it would be a salesmans dream to sell that truck NEW for $30K.

Not that I rebuilt mine, but it is nice to see people saving trucks!

I don't understand how you got that truck for that price then, when people are buying 2 year old trucks NOW for $20K ish.

Remember, 04-05 was before the recession, and the low Ford pricing, etc. I remember looking at a 2002 at that time for $25K. I refused to spend $25K for a used truck so I decided to buy a wrecked one.

My brother confirmed that he bought a basic SLT in 2004 for $23,800. How did you get such a good price? Was that with a trade in?

I worked at a dealership when I was in college and saw a lot of dents and bends on vehicles. The owner always told us to remember one thing: When you buy a salvage titled vehicle you're the last owner unless you give it away.
Well, I think that was a bit drastic, but in general you need to really love the truck if you buy it salvaged which you do.
Best of luck on a very nice truck.

I'm a big fan of driving a truck into the ground. I don't like truck payments. I still have my first truck - 94 Ranger. Runs like a champ. I had my 04 F150 paid off in 3 years and I'm going to run it into the ground.

One thing about taking it all apart and putting it back together - you know how to fix anything on it now.

JM- I want to make it clear that I wasn't putting down what you did, but I wish I was technologically advanced to scan my Bill of Sale in (blacking out the name ) so that you could see that I wasn't joking. Most people pay way too much for vehicles period because they don't know how to buy. I could have bought it for even less but I wanted the fog lights and that comes with something else (can't remember what) and so I couldn't get quite as good a deal. Cost me about $500. more because of the FL's. I NEVER trade a vehicle in. My vehicles are ALWAYS like new and I always get more selling them private than trading them in. My older brother bought an XLT Super Crew (NEW)with even more than I have (back up alarm and keyless entry and a couple of other things small things that mine didn't have) in Dec. '07, '07 model, for around $20k. I payed more for mine in '04 because it was the 1st year and were still selling very fast. He made no trade either. Right now there is a dealer within a mile of me advertising '10's (Super Crews, XLT's with all the normal eq. you would order, for $10.5k off of window, 8 at that price) and they absolutely do not try and jack up the price. I have purchased 4 new F-150's in 9 years and have always gotten these kind of deals. EVERY salesman is trained to size the customer up when he comes through the door, and drain him of every dime he can. It's like a chess game, the cleverest guy wins. They didn't with me!
