HELP Truck shuts off, just replaced battery
HELP Truck shuts off, just replaced battery
I just replaced my OEM battery (6 years old) with a 850cca battery. Now when I drive the truck dies after coming to a stop sign. It doesn't completely shut off every time it just drops back down to idle at times and then its fine, until the next stop sign. If I let it idle for a few minutes it will shut off by itself. Any idea what I can do to fix it. We tested the battery and it's fully charged so I know the battery isn't the problem. A friend of mine is having the exact same problem. We both have 2004 FX4's.
One of two things happened. One you knocked off a vacuum hose some where when replacing it. Recheck everything, hoses, wires, connectors, and make sure there is nothing hanging loose.
Or keep driving and see if it gets better. The computer could be trying to relearn but this should not take very long and if it has died more than two or three times then that is probably NOT it.
The Vacuum line is my best guess though.

I took it to a Ford dealer and they said to just keep driving it and it will "work itself out" I don't know that I'm buying that though. It's hard for me to believe that Ford would design something that would shut off while driving. Any other suggestions?
The battery and the shutting off sound unrelated. I would try all the standard maintenance stuff like replacing fuel filter, clean air filter and especially cleaning the throttle body. I had my truck shut off on me while driving two years ago. Symptoms leading up to this were a stumble while idling. I took a rag that was wet (but not soaked) with WD-40 and cleaned inside the TB including the butterfly valve. I was shocked at how much gunk had built up. When clean, I put the air cleaner assembly back together and it not only fixed my idle, the truck hasn't experienced the issue since. In fact, it's probably time for another cleaning. This next go around, I want to remove the TB and clean it on the bench...
Good luck and post back what you find.

If you replace the battery the kams are cleared as well as idle stradegy. What you need to do is either unhook the battery and wait at least 2 minutes or unhook the pcm(all 3 connectors)this is instant. Then make sure when you hook back up everything is turned off a/c radio anything that would create a draw. What happens is pcm controls the alternator if these things are on when you start the pcm cant adjust idle afterwards leading to a low idle and dying concern. Try this should fix the problme
It isn't the alternator or fuel filter. Just replaced the fuel filter less than 1000 miles ago and we checked the alternator. The engine doesn't sputter it just shuts off (it's not a fuel problem). It's definitely electrical, something with the PCM. Would getting it reflashed work? I'll try the unhooking the battery for 2 min and see if that works for now.

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) may be illuminated with diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0506 and/or P0505. These conditions may appear after battery disconnect, dead battery condition, or keep alive memory (KAM) reset. The symptoms may be due to engine deposits in the throttle leading to airflow less than desired.
ACTION:
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Reprogram the powertrain control module (PCM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 53.9 and higher or 54.1 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2008.1 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at www.motorcraft.com. The calibration contains a sludge compensation strategy for the throttle body.
Turn the key off to re-initialize the PCM. This will allow the sludge compensation strategy to learn.
With the vehicle in park or neutral and A/C off, start vehicle and allow engine to reach normal operating temperature(greater than 170 °F (77 °C) coolant temperature). Run an additional 5 minutes to allow sufficient learning time.
While the engine is running, using IDS datalogger or equivalent, check the PID value of ETC_TRIM.
If ETC_TRIM value is 3.5 degrees, and/or DTC P115E is present, then replace the electronic throttle body (ETB), following Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-04B.
If ETC_TRIM value is less than 3.5 degrees and DTC P115E is not present, but driveability concerns persist, the ETB is not the likely cause of the concern and replacement is not necessary. Continue with normal PC/ED diagnostics.
NOTE: VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A PCM AND TCM REQUIRE COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING. THIS COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING PROCEDURE MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY AS OUTLINED BY THE IDS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THE KEY CYCLE PROCEDURE WITHOUT WAITING FOR THE IDS PROMPTS, WILL CAUSE THE COORDINATED REPROGRAMMING TO FAIL. THE PCM WILL BE UPDATED BUT THE TCM WILL NOT BE UPDATED AND NEW FILES WILL NOT BE INSTALLED. IT IS CRITICAL TO FOLLOW THE IDS PROMPTS. SOME VEHICLES MAY REQUIRE SEVERAL DAYS OF DRIVING FOR THE TRANSMISSION TO FULLY ADAPT. REPROGRAMMING CONCERNS/ERRORS MAY BE CAUSED BY THE DATA LINK CONNECTOR (DLC) OR VEHICLE COMMUNICATION MODULE (VCM) BECOMING DISCONNECTED, LOW BATTERIES ON THE INTEGRATED DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM (IDS) OR THE IDS GOING INTO ANY TYPE OF SLEEP MODE, OR LOW VEHICLE BATTERY VOLTAGE. IF THERE WAS AN INTERRUPTION DURING REPROGRAMMING, MAKE SURE THE ORIGINAL IDS SESSION THAT WAS CREATED FOR THE VEHICLE IS NOT DELETED. IF THE ORIGINAL VEHICLE SESSION IS NOT USED OR DELETED BEFORE THE MODULES ARE COMPLETELY REPROGRAMMED, FURTHER REPROGRAMMING ERRORS CAN OCCUR. THE MODULE RECOVERY PROCEDURE IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE AND IT IS CRITICAL THAT MODULE SWAPPING IS NOT PERFORMED FROM VEHICLE TO VEHICLE. TO REGAIN COMMUNICATION WITH A MODULE THAT HAS BEEN ERASED DURING REPROGRAMMING, RESUME THE ORIGINAL SESSION ONCE THE IDS IS RE-BOOTED.

Thanks everyone. I unhooked the battery for two minutes and hooked it back up. Everything seems to be working great now. My idle does seem lower than it should, along with some hesitation as mentioned in the above post. I'll have to see what I can do about that.
