Finally!! Audio Install - pics
Finally!! Audio Install - pics
After waffling for the last 5 years, I finally decided to look into upgrading the stereo system in the F150. After doing some research on the internet I stumbled onto a diy audio forum, and found a guy posting impressively clean systems, and he happened to live in the same city (San Jose, CA)!! Since I didnt have the time or patience to install a system (last one was 16 years ago), I decided to give this guy a call. Bing (www.simplicityinsound.com) guided me in the right direction after telling him what I wanted:
Simple, stealth, clean sounding, budget minded.
I provided him a Kenwood 6140, because I wanted the Garmin GPS, bluetooth, backup camera, dvd, and most importantly, a volume ****
.
For my needs, he selected:
Fronts - Image dynamics XS57 5x7" components (mounted coaxially)
Sub - Exile XT10 (shallow)
Amp - Exile 800.4xi 4
On to the photos!!
Kenwood 6140

The attention to detail is in the wiring. Meticulous wiring ziptied every 2-3 inches!

Deadend the back wall and mounted the ID crossovers. He also deadened the doors.

IDs in the OEM location.

He came up with the idea to have the amp rack next to the sub box, and on a budget, I expected him to just carpet the whole thing, but since Bing wanted to give it that custom look, he spent a little extra time to create a separate top cover and wrap it in vinyl. What a difference!

Another angle.

It sounded great when I picked it up...but the true quality shined when I was driving home from a night out and my wife cranked it to the max (Space Lord - Monster Magnet), and there was zero distortion! What a great little system.
More pics on the install including sub box and amp rack construction can be found here.

very nice. that box looks awesome
one little thing though. He screwed through your back wall with 8 bolts...I'm sure they are self tapping...and hopefully he used silicone to seal the holes?

Thats a nice box.I've been kicking around getting one.Just haven't decided if I want to loose the space.I put the seat up so when the dog jumps in she doesn't harm the seat.I'd have to make a cover over the speaker so she doesn't jump on IT.
But again..nice
But again..nice

Just make the subs downfiring rather than up.
Tylus - Yes the screws are self tapping and the butyl in the sound deadening seals the holes.
posttal - as ride_002000 mentioned, box configs can be downfiring, and fully carpeted, hopefully your dog wouldn't be too heavy to crush the box.
Amp(s) can be mounted on an mdf sheet against the back wall behind the seat.
Wade06XLT - another option instead of two 10s is to take a look at Stereo Integrity's 12" BM mkIII subwoofer (shallow mount). There is a thread in the subwoofer section on a group buy. Killer price too. I was thinking of going that route, but I'm in the process of moving and couldn't wait for the new subs to ship.
Coobies - The exile amp is nice, and definitely has enough to power my fronts (125 watts rms to each), and sub (400 watts rms). As a side note, aesthically the exile logo on the amp lights up blue and fades to white when powered up. Definitely not a reason to buy alone, but a neat little detail.
Thanks for the comments guys, I truly wanted a simple, unobtrusive, ear pleasing system to where I can "set it, and forget it" and enjoy. This will get me through the next 5 years.

alot of the 04/05 guys can tell you horror stories about it and their fenders. the butyl traps and localizes moisture. some guys saw their body panel rust out within 1-2 yrs.
I personally would take a few mintues and seal that puppy up with some Outdoor grade silicone that stays pliant.
I'm not an audio guy, but that is one sweet looking setup otherwise
