Ashtray is Rattling almost constantly
I'm not sure which trucks came with this type ashtray, but I have the complete center console with shifter. The ashtray just rattles constantly and has gotten worse since taking a trip to a crappy area of TX a few weeks ago.
I know it is the latching mechanism that is causing the problem because if I leave the ashtray open it goes away completely. It also goes away if while the ashtray is closed and rattling, I just touch it with my finger and hold it there.
I haven't taken it apart to see if there's anything I can do, but was wondering if anyone had a similar issue and what they did to resolve it. I would try to search, but this site is still causing me major issues even since it was supposedly fixed and I can't get any search results

Take the astray assembly out by removing the bolts. You will notice the assembly has three plastic pins that fit into the console. Put felt tape around the pins. You will see where they where rubbing against console ( that is what tsb calls for). After i did this i still had somewhat of a rattle. So I took the ashray out of the assembly and found that the tray uses a metal guide pin that follows a oval like path for opening and closing. Where the metal pin rests in close position(metal on plastic), that is where some of the rattle happens. So I just put more felt tape in that area. No more rattles. Hope this helps.
I JUST fixed mine after 4 years...it finally got too unbearable. I removed the ashtray and using some leftover loop side of Velcro (I used the hook side to secure my BedRug), I covered every portion where plastic touched plastic. I am sure I over did it but when I was done, it sort of wedge fit back into place and now the rattle is completely gone. As mentioned, you can use felt and it is readily available at any hardware store. All in all, an easy fix and should've been done years ago!
Good luck.
Good luck.
