Question Whining Noise on Cold Mornings (Video)

I bought this truck new last September. It did it through the past winter, but I never really thought anything of it and forgot about it through the rest of the year because it's not cold, so this doesn't occur. Now that it's getting cold around here again, the noise is back. I did research about this and I read about a lot of people that described a very similar situation and their trucks went back to Ford multiple times and it was never fixed. I wanted to get an opinion here before taking it to the dealer. I would much rather leave it be, than have a dealer replacing a bunch of OEM parts just to "try" and fix the "problem". I attached a couple videos to show what I'm talking about, as this is much more accurate than describing a sound. In the second video you can hear the whining noise drop down with the idle as it warms up. If I press the gas, it will sound again for a second or so. When the truck warms up, it goes away. ANY input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I've had a whirring sound in my '02 since new but it's a different sound than yours. On mine, it's the power steering pump that Ford claims is normal. Just for kicks, try turning the steering wheel a bit in each direction to see if the noise changes. it does on mine...

My 08 sounded like a faint train whistle or tea kettle when it got down past freezing. It would go away after the truck warmed up for a couple of minutes. Dealership replaced the idler pulley under warranty, problem solved.

I'll have to give that a try. That would be quite interesting.

Interesting. That sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing. If that's the case, it will be going to the dealer.

Any other input is appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Interesting. On my '02, I get that as well. If I turn off overdrive, it goes away. My auto trans. is in the process of failing, so I figured it was just related.

Well...that sure as hell better not be my problem. It did it since new in cold weather.

That's the same sound I'm getting from my '02. The other sound I was referring to in my first reply was right at startup and I've been told it's the P/S pump.

I wonder if turning off the O/D while I'm driving is causing more load on the engine and effectively making the noise go away?

Mine does the same on startup... but, if I turn the wheel back and forth a bit, it goes away. Power Steering pump obviously. Makes me wonder if its worth it to go back to the dealer with it, or if its something to just live with.

PartsChaser:

For what it's worth, I 'followed' this problem from the dealer where I purchased my '02 from to two other dealers and then to directly to Ford and service area rep to no avail. Either they denied there was a problem or claimed it was normal and all trucks did that.

I did have my power steering pump replaced under warranty and that had no effect. My truck has done it for 8 years now...

(BTW, this is a different problem than posted above)

There is a TSB for this. It is one of the belt pulleys and once the pulley warms up the noise stops. My truck did this under about 35 degrees, took it back to the dealer and they replaced the pulley and i havent heard it since. I will try and find the TSB number.

I would believe that it's a pulley or the belt tensioner, but it must not apply to 2002 because I just went over the TSBs a week or so ago.

I believe the TSB is specifically for 2008 trucks. I looked for it but could not find it, I had it performed at the beginning of summer.
