Will my 04 give a lean condition with this setup

I have an 04 with an edge programmer. If I add the Granatelli cold air intake that comes with a calibrated MAF will I still get the lean condition that 04-05 are known for?

I have the edge and a volant on my 05 5.4 with no problems at all. I'm at nearly 6000 ft above sea level which I think would make the condition worse but haven't had a cell thrown in over 4 1/2 years.

You won't know until you try it, but the odds are pretty good that you will be lean. Keep in mind, you can be lean and never know it. Also, why take the chance for the few added hp? The Edge is not tuned to take advantage of extra air, so all you are really doing is adding looks and sound and taking a lot of risk. Convert to a Gryphon with custom tunes that will take advantage of a CAI and you won't have any worries.

IRRC you can get Gryphon tunes if you already own an Edge. Damn I need to do this too. Uuggg!

Slight hijack,

anyone know if cold air (low 40's) and a heavy foot can generate a lean condition? Mine did this twice this month. I know the CIA filter needs cleaned and if work ever lets me have a descent day off I'd do it.

It was the 2004's that were notoriously lean if I remember correctly. It takes very little to push them over the edge which can lead to damage very fast.

2004s and early 2005s.

Anyone know what Ford did to correct the problem....was it just a pcm re-programming?

yes, they modified the fuel to air ratio. Same thing tuners do.

I have read a few comments about the Edge Evo running lean. Since I have the EVO and a Airaid CAI, this worries me. What type of damage can occur and how can I tell if I have a problem? I am going to look into the Gryphon... I read that I can send them my EVO and have it retuned... Anyone done this or had trouble with the EVO on a CAI?

As noted above, it is the earlier 5.4s that experienced most of the lean condition. Yours is a 2007 and should be alright with the Edge and a CAI, although there have been a few that experienced it. If it is lean enough to be noticed, it will be an engine rattle or pinging sound, under hard acceleration.

I'll point out again that even though you may not be running lean, the CAI will give you limited results without custom tunes. You need the custom tune to take advantage of the increased air available.

Like was mentioned above, it's not the Evolution with the CAI... It's the CAI with an 04/05 5.4L 3V engine. You can send your Evo to PHP (powerhungryperformance.com) and for $25 they'll convert it to a Gryphon. You can then purchase custom tunes to take your CAI into account for $60 each. Problem solved.

Has anyone created a custom tune on the EVO? There are some adjustable parameters that can be done... I did make some changes to mine but for fear of something up, I decided to set it back to the canned performance setting. How do the custom Gryphon tunes compare to the adjustments that can be made in the EVO?

Those are custom settings. All of us that had an Edge played with those and set them to our liking. The Gryphon custom tunes start all over and is a completely different tune, which can also be adjusted if you wish. My custom tunes were great and I never adjust them.
