For those that have a vibration.....

My 2004 5.4 with 100,000 miles began a vibration last year at speeds between 65mph thru 72mph.

I balanced a half dozen times, changed to new tires, front end alignment 3 or 4 times, and even bought new CHROME WHEELS thinking that was my problem.....

STILL had the vibration until I changed to BILSTEIN 5100's and raised the front end 2".

Can somebody please tell me that shocks can cause a vibration????
anybody...anybody? BUELER?? BUELER???

I would have snickered if somebody told me to change the SHOCKS!

Vibration

If it was mine, I'd check out the u-joints next. After that, I'd check the drive shafts to insure it hasn't thrown a weight.

I am assuming you are saying the vibration was in the front. Mine was exactly opposite - at the same speeds the drivers side rear was bouncing all over the place. You could see it in the side mirror - weird. It was time for new tires and along with new rear shocks, it quit.

Bad shocks will allow vibrations to pass on to the passenger compartment. If your shocks were OE, I would not be surprised they were bad. And probably have been for a while. If you already haven't done it, I would suggest you replace the rear also.

maybe. but if he's got a vibration, something else is going on that needs to be fixed, not band-aided with new shocks.

I did replace all 4 shocks............
and you could be right, it may be "masking" the real problem.

But, what's remaining on the front end.?......
"upper" and "lower" ball joints........
how do I determine which of those is bad?
If I remember correctly, the "uppers: are VERY PRICEY!

jack the truck up so you can get a tire off the ground. grab the tire at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock and try to rock the tire back and forth. if there's play in it, they need to be replaced.

i'd take a close look at all of the bushings while i was under there as well.

i have a steering wheel vibration as well at the speeds you mention and i've got the 5100's. i do know my rotors need to be replaced as i've got some pulsating in the wheel and pedal when i hit the brakes. i wouldn't think that would cause the steering wheel to shake when cruising at 65. you would think if that was the case that i would feel it at all speeds.

No matter what you do, you are going to have some vibrations. And every vehicle has a resonance point where vibrations show up. The new F150 with the stiffer frame seems to show this more than past models. That is why you have things like frame dampeners, so the vibrations do not get passed on to the passenger compartment.

RockAuto.com has the Moog uppers for 90.00 each and lowers for 28.00 each. I've replaced both my ball joints and I still have a slight vibration in my steering at around 60-65mph. And yes, I had the vibe before AND after my lift was installed. I personally think that my parking brake is causing the vibration but it could also be the driveshaft. I have learned to live with it as it is very slight, but I sure would like to get rid of it.

I fixed a vibration in my 98 F150 by getting a new driveshaft. It would be fine until you got around 65, then the whole truck seemed to vibrate. I took it to a shop and that was one of the first things they checked. I replaced that and it was a whole lot better. It still had small vibrations, but nothing like it was.
