In 2wd, our front drive shafts do not spin, correct?

If mine is spinning in 2wd, where is the first place you would look? Vac lines?

 

i think the driveshaft does spin but the hubs just arent engaged. im no mechanic so dont take my word for it but thats just something i heard around the way.

 

I think they spin in 2wd, just arent engaged at the differential? I'm not totally sure though, I seem to remember that for some reason

if your hearing that grinding noise then its probably a vacuum leak. it should be an easy fix though. check the vacuum hoses behind the front rotors and also check the other ends of em to make sure none have came off or split open. if they seem to be good then it may be the 4x4 solenoid or the hub actuators. you will need a vacuum gauge to figure out for sure if somethings leaking and i think theres a TSB on the solenoid.

Yea my 4wd works fine. I can hear and feel my front drive shaft spinning. I know it is something small and it has to be related to the vac system. I had my driver side hub pop once but that was because the hose was pinched. I fixed that problem when I saw it. This one is stumping me.

Ive had mine on a life and spun the front tires and everything rotated, half-shafts and drive shaft. So Im thinkin it all spins when its in 2wheel, its in the xfer case that it engages to put power to it.

 

Was the motor on when you spun the front tires? The hubs lock when you turn the motor off which would make everything spin.

 

True, you need to have the engine running to provide vacuum pressure to disengage the hubs. If you loose that pressure the hubs "relax" into the engaged mode. But...I don't believe that the front drive shaft would spin, or at least with any torque. Reason I say that is because of the threads where people had to whack the shift motor on the transfer case to get the 4x4 to engage.

Impact thank you for that link! I wonder if my shift motor is stuck in the 4 wheel drive position, which to me it sounds like it might be. My hubs are working so I don't have the problem of being in 4 wheel drive, but my drive shaft and front diff are spinning and wasting power. I have noticed wacky gas mileage lately and this explains it.

Impact thank you, thank you. A wack of the hammer and the motor made a little noise and now it works again. Very, Very, strange to say the least. Guess I'll start using my 4wd more in the summer. I mostly use it in the winter.
