If the cam phasers are what's causing your noise then yes new ones will fix the problem. The cam phaser problem was mostly with the 04-05 F150's so the truck's you hear with a quiet cam phaser either has had their's replaced or the original ones haven't worn out. The best oil to run is 5w-20 which is what the manufacturers recommend.

Mine were replaced at 20K miles and they're making a little more noise then they did when they were initially replaced. It was very quiet immediately following the fix.

I have not found a good explanation of what causes the problem, or how to slow or prevent it.

Ford recommends Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend, which is precisely why I use it.

Cam phasers make noise. When they do make noise they do not damage the engine. Ford dealers will gladly change out your noisy cam phasers to pacify your ears, it is an expensive job.

I think he is asking which oil to use to prevent the cam phaser problem.

just replaced both of the cam phasers, its super quiet now. Different viscosity oil won't make the noise go away. I experimented before replacing mine.

Are you saying that those who have a problem with the cam phasers are those who did not use Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend? That they could have prevented the problem with Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend, or that the phasers would have lasted longer with Motorcraft 5w20 synthetic blend?

I dont think he is saying any of the above. The OP asked two questions, and he answered both.
