My '03 had the painted bumpers like your FX4, and I know what you mean about how those do in the winter. I love how the trucks look with painted bumpers, but I refuse to buy a truck that doesn't have the polished bumpers. The polished bumpers seem to last much longer.

Where do you take it for the 'oiling'? What kind of oil?
There's a shop about 45 minutes from my house that oils vehicles. He does the frame and all the body panels. I'm not sure what he uses, he wouldn't tell me because it's his own "special mix". Whatever it is though, it works.

I agree, I love the look of painted bumpers but the "chrome" bumpers last 10x longer.

Just a little update, been doing ~30k/yr. Rolled over 250,000 last month.

I typically do fuel filter, air filter, trans flush every 50k
Coolant, hoses and belts every 100k
Oil every 5k

My only "issues" other than routine maintenance
  • OEM Battery lasted 150k
  • Alternator went at 155k probably from trying to keep oem battery charged.
  • Shocks/struts changed at 200k
  • Rear pinion and axle seal at 245k, replaced all seals. Bearings were still in great shape.

Still on stock front rotors/bearings. 1 set of pads so far. Probably change it all out at 300k.

As far as MPG, I track every tank of gas in a spreadsheet and for the last 3 years it has been right at 19mpg for the year. Typically on my commute I get 21. Got 22.5 today but I had a good 20mph tail wind

My 05 KR SCrew has a hair over 190K. Plugs were changed at 110K and I just had the oil filter adapter and oil pan gaskets replaced.

Off topic, I got 305/65/18 BFG AT KOs put on at 87K, and I just replaced them at 190K. The rep at 4 Wheel Parts couldn't believe it.
