Clunk, Crack Sound while driving -04 F150 XLT

Well with my luck I may just have lost my exhaust mod money to fixing whatever broke.

I was going from one highway on to another at 35 to 40 and I heard a clunk sound followed by a crackling sound which didn't end til I pulled over on the shoulder. Got out and looked under and didn't see anything external broken.

Went to work and had my car wiz of a manager take a look at it and he said it may have been something minor that might've bounced up under the truck or it could be something internal. It only happened once and I drove it from there to work and back which was about another 25 miles.

Anyone have anything similar happen like this? Maybe its a reoccurring problem.

Rather not take it to Ford since I can't trust them anymore.

*They recently just finished messing up my friend's 07+ Mustang when they tried to replace the clutch and have the flywheel finished....messed up his clutch joints, screwed up his power mirrors, made him throw o2 sensor codes, and a bunch of other stuff* But thats another story lol

Just let me know if anyone else has experienced this before I make a 90 minute drive to see the Club's Loyal Ford Dealer in Toms River -- much more reputable.

Well heard more of it today while driving in down pour, luckily I made it to Ford who told me they couldn't look at it til tomorrow morning so home I brought it. Back over there tomorrow to find out whats wrong and how much more broke I will be.

Not the 4wd automatically engaging problem so I wonder what it could be.

I have a 05 4x4 and the same thing happened to me 2 times. It happened after having my front lower ball joints replaced. It sounds like its coming out of the front driver side wheel. Let me know what you find out. I brought my truck to the place the did the work and they said they couldn't find anything.

well if the 4x4 was loosing vacuum pressure it might have made a similar sound since it would of defaulted to engaged. But really hard to tell without being there to hear it. Anyways let us know what it is.

Well I found out the problem. Broken Heat Sheild dangling over my exhaust.

Worst Part came after: My tire rods are extremely loose in the front end. I spoke to the mechanic and he told me its Dangerously loose, and said I shouldnt drive on it for much longer.

Problem is the wheel bearings are squeaking and needs to be fixed too. So almost 400 for tire rods and another 550 for the bearings, so what do i do? I know it has to be fixed but it looks like im screwed because I have no idea where to get $1000 from

sounds like a DIY job. Really it's not that hard to change out those parts I just wish I could find the instructions on alldata for tie rods. Alldata is showing about $120 per outer tie rod and $60 for inner. No price for the bearings but those are easy to replace. Now is a good time to pick up a Chilton manual. You would need a front end alignment after you replace the tie rods. Might just hook up with a buddy to change this stuff out.

Thanks man, Wish I had the space and leveled ground to this. I know I can't do it by myself since I'm not mechanically inclined with F150s yet, more than halfway with Mustangs, so it'll take up time. Definitely should pickup that manual.

If I had a step by step of how to do it, I sure would attempt it with a friend. I was quoted at $120 as well.
