Powdercoat/ptm over chrome?

I have been thinking of PTM my bumpers and blacking out my rims, emblems, and step bars. Does anyone know if it is possible to paint over chrome and paint or powdercoat over chromed aluminum rims and step bars? I have been thinking of going this route for a while and this picture that DarrenWS6 photoshopped made up my mind.

By the way, if anyone wants to trade any of my chrome items for black ones that is local to massachusetts let me know. Also looking to go back to black handles if someone with toreador red wants to swap plus some $$.

I definitely would not recommend painting over chrome. Also, I would trade bumpers with you (I have gray painted bumpers that could easily be repainted any color) except these do not have the fog light holes.

Hey tmd, first off, if you were going to have your chrome bumpers painted, I'd have them sprayed with Bulldog adhesion promoter 'first'. I bet this would make the paint hold > as well < as paint will hold to any primered, metal surface.

However, the paint itself is just not as durable as powdercoat. If paint gets hit with a rock, it will straight up chip.... Whereas with powdercoat, it kind of mashes back in one tiny spot, then flexes back over the point of impact. In other words, powdercoat is sort of softer, but way tougher.

I had my front and rear chrome bumpers powder coated almost a year ago, in satin black, and they have held up really well ! Not one tiny chip where you can see chrome underneath. If you look really close on the front bumper, you can find a couple of those little "mash marks" where the powder coat has stretched back over the "injury" to hide the chrome underneath.

Gloss black powder coat will probably stay gloss black, and can be waxed, to protect it.
My satin black seemed to be getting a little grayer since a year ago, so I started using that liquid Ice on them, and I swear they look blacker now, than when I first had them done.

Hope this helps,
Peace,
Fish

Truck looks really good in that photoshop. I say go the podwercoat route, I think I am doing the same in the near future. I've seen on craigslist more than once you could get them done for $100 a bumper.

You might get lucky and have your local powder coating shop be able to match that color, but I doubt it.

Powdercoat is usually mixed paints to achieve the color as most are and occasionally do not match as well. Black and white match well.

Well, if you're able to find a way to get it done, do it! I think it'll look awesome.

A lot of shops don't match paint. They have a set number of colors they can do. Usually bright red, black, white, yellow is doable.
