Body Shop Said No To PTM Mirrors!
I have a 2005 FX4 and went to my local body shop today to get a quote on how much it would cost to get my mirrors and handles painted to match and they said it couldnt be done because of the textured plastic. Im wondering if they would be willing to do it if i sanded them myself or if they are just lazy and dont want to do it. Im really tempted now to do it myself but im not sure where to get the PTM paint and also dont know how good they would look out of a can.
Two other options for ya.
1. You could try to find a set being sold on ebay or elsewhere that matches your paint.
-or-
2. You could purchase the Putco Chrome covers (plastic) and have them PTM. They come smooth so that will eliminate the sanding factor.
Just a though.

Id paint them and when they turn out bad a** go back and say hey look I did it myself, now go #%!$ youself. lol
I found my PTM Paint at www.automotivetouchup.com i just ordered 2 cans of charcoal beige to do my emblems. Ran me about $50 for 2 12oz cans. But this is the only place I could find it. If yours is silver try the duplicolor truck and van they should have the paint to match your paint code too, its cheaper and usually you can find it at a local auto parts. Too bad they dont make a match for my color.

Seems like they should be able to prep them themselves. I'm surprised they wouldn't do it.
Try this website: http://www.expresspaint.com/. You can order a bunch of different sizes of factory-matched paint from a touch-up pen all the way to a quart. They even have spray cans for $25.
I agree with the guy that said to just do it yourself, then take it back and show them how awesome it looks.

BS. You can prep them yourself and take them back and ill gurantee they will paint them. The place I took them said "they cant be painted bc of the texture and all the plastice release used when they do the mold". I laughed went home and prepped them myself (sanding priming etc) took them back and they never said a word and they where the exact same mirrors and have held up for over a year and half now just perfectly!
No kidding, that was helpfull. This is just like when my POS dealership told me I had to order a whole running board and I couldnt just order the cap. Well, I just installed my CAP from ordered from Tasca.
The body shop I work does great work, and they wouldnt do them either. The texture is a pain in the butt to fix, most dont know all the labor it would take to get them right and actually last without flaking or what not. I have done a textured valence on my ranger that turned out smooth as glass, but would I guarantee it to a customer, never. Sure it can be done but putting a ton of primer over roughed up texture isnt really the right way to do it imo. It can be done, but the time it would take me to do it, would probably lose the shop money. lol
Just buy a set of painted handles, even if there not the right color, then take them to the body shop and you should get a guarantee with a short turn around.
