Dammit, someone said it before I could.

Pick an oil. Most any oil. Change it regularly, use a good filter, and quit thinking so hard about oil.

Exactly, you can spend $80 an oil change or $15 and still have a solid engine at 100,000 miles. These are tough engines that are easy on oil, so buy a good brand name and quality filter and stop worrying.

Read this.

According to this article, Amsoil and Redline are two of very few true synthetic oils left on the market.

I used to use Mobil 1, but it was unavailable for a while in the cheaper 5 qt bottles, so I switched to Pennzoil Platinum "synthetic". It's $20 for 5 qt bottles at Walmart.

I have been using the 0 30 Signature series Amsoil in my 05 Lariat, last change went 17,000 km between changes, the EO11 filters are rated for 25,000 miles, never gone that long myself. same weight summer and winter up here in northern Canada truck now has 148,000 kms and seems to run well.

On my 2001 I ran Mobil 1 the entire time with no issues at all. Lots of cold starts and "hot runs" immediately after starting without even a hiccup. I just had my first oil change on my 2008 about a month ago and went with the Motorcraft blend. I'll see how it goes - should be fine based on what I have read on here.

I use to run royal purple until that crap shot up to almost $10 a quart at O'Reilly's. Yea no joke. So I switched to Mobile 1 since it was just over $5. Seems to lube just fine to me.

Even with Synthetic oil I still change every 4K, I want to be a 300,000+ mileage person here in about another 10 years!

I've run full synthetic since my first oil change. Started with Pennzoil, now strictly Royal Purple. Done me good so far.

Ive pondered the ideal of synthethic but just absolutely refuse to do it I guess. I have many many miles on straight valvoline conventional oil in over 4 ford vehicles and several other brand x vehicles and never once have I ever had engne failure do to OIL. I am a firm believer in regular changes and can not see any reason to change. To each his own I guess. This is just my opinion.

According to that article, his 429 Mustang went from 10-11mpg to 17-18 mpg just by switching to synthetic Mobil 1. I don't think anybody in their right mind would believe that.

He also states that Mobil 1 is a true synthetic. That is no longer true. It's a group III oil made of dino oil. It used to be PAO, polyalphaolefin, but no longer along with almost all other "synthetics". That is not to say it isn't a good oil, it just ain't synthetic.

This is my thought process as well. I can't justify the additional cost. Synthetics still need to be changed at the same intervals as conventional oil because they pick up the same amount of dirt over that 3-4000 miles. You can run synthetics for 6,7,10,000 miles but the filter stopped working 4000 miles back. By 10K the filter is clogged with dirt and the bypass valve has opened. This means the dirty oil is just flowing through UNFILTERED and back into the engine.

The people running synthetics to "extend" their oil change intervals are doing more harm then good.

That is exactly how I feel, no matter what oil you use, it needs to be changed regularly.......That is the key to a clean, long lasting 5.4!.....
