New guy here, got some questions
Hey new guy here, just found these forums by searching up f150's.
Anyway, Im looking to buy a ford f150 very soon, within the years of 04-06 with a v8 for sure. Not sure if it will be the 5.4 or the 4.6 yet. Needless to say ive got numerous questions and thought a forum of owners with experience would help out.
So a little info about me,
18 years old.. 19 soon
Ill be paying my own insurance and car note should I have one
Ive been around cars my whole life, from supercharged Chevelle's to slow *** neons...
Right into it, what do you guys think about the truck, such as:
Is it reliable?
How many miles do they last?
Maintenance?
Any idea's on Mods? (outside of lights and pipes)
Ect....
Thanks a lot guys.

Welcome. Any truck can last a lifetime as long as you take care of it. I can't speak on anything about the V8's because mine is a 4.2 V6, but I've had mine for over a year and have not had to do anything other than change the oil.
Hey man! I have the 5.4 V8. I love it, not too much power but as soon as I get my Gryphon I'm sure it'll be more than enough. The possibilities with these trucks are endless. They are just like any thing though, you could end up with a lemon or you could end up with a great one. I've had mine over 4 years and had no problems whatsoever(besides those of my own doing) They can last forever if you just do regular maintenance, they are great trucks, and won't ever let you down! GET ONE!
Well we're all glad that your looking for a newer F150, and welcome to the greatest F150 forum on the net!
When you're trying to choose either 4.6 or the 5.4, you need to make sure the truck is properly equipped. You don't want to buy a crew cab 4X4 with the 4.6. It will be an utter dog and you'll be wanting the big 331 in no time. A short bed regular cab truck 2WD would be perfect for the 4.6 because it will weigh almost 1000 pounds less than the crew cab 4X4's. Also, if you tow regularly, you'll want the 5.4 just for the torque.
Reliability is another issue with these engines. Since the 4.6 has been around for over a decade, Ford has worked all the kinks out of it and there are very little problems with this engine.
The 5.4 on the other hand has a rather large number of problems depending on the year you choose. 04-05's have a bad habit of running dangerously lean with the factory programming. A cold air intake is all it takes to send it over the edge and start the slow process of internal destruction. These years also break spark plugs off inside the cylinder heads. These repairs are costly, if the plugs break, and Ford doesn't warranty it. 05's also have faulty injectors that can stay open and hydro lock the engine. Since the 5.4's have 3 valves, they have cam phasers. I don't know what the full story on these is, but they cost a lot to fix when they wear out. 06-08's really don't suffer from these problems fortunately.
Fuel mileage also changes with the engines and depending on how big the truck is. Big trucks with 4X4 gets terrible mileage, while the small 2WD gets good mileage. (You'd be surprised how many people don't know about this)
Mods are a good thing and both engines have a large modification list. The 5.4 has superchargers, cams, LT headers, etc. The 4.6 has this too, a lot of it comes from the Mustang modders like superchargers, cams, etc.
