my 04 is a dog

Recently i've been noticing my truck at around 40-50 KPH has been a complete big. I went to pass a slow moving dumptruck today and the truck didnt seem to want to gear down. and the other day I went to pass a car going about 70 KPH and the same thing. Truck is an 04 f150 with a k&N intake and straight pipe exhaust. And i'm to broke for a tuner right now

Sounds like I know what I'll be doing this weekend... Mine has been acting a little sluggish lately, too. I have an '04 Screw FX4. Only has 52K miles. I'll le tyou know if it helps.

Does it idle fine? The K&N probably isn't helping, letting in more dirt and oil as well as making the truck probably running lean.

I have a K/N drop in and have never had an issue with dirt, or fouling the MAF. I do run PHP custom tunes, so I know I am not running lean.

Fuel filters are cheap. I'd start there since it won't hurt to change it anyway.

Fuel line tool set, $10. Filter around $13 IIRC. Change thread in how to.

You are risking your entire engine with a CAI on a 2004 and no custom tunes. It's your risk to take.

The tool for a fuel filter is about $10, the filter about $13. You probably need to clean the MAF and a can of spray is about $10

I've actually found that the $10 tool is less helpful than the $2 plastic disconnect tools available at your local Harbor Freight. Just my personal opinion but, I think that the plastic tool is MUCH more friendly to use...

Like the BLUE one shown here...

All a personal preference though... bottom line, it's definitely a safe thing to change out the fuel filter and to *not* go with a drop in without a tune. It'll run dangerously lean.

You are absolutely correct about the tool. However, I paid $10 for the metal one and then went back and paid $10 more for an assortment of the plastic ones. As flimsy as the appear, they are actually better than the metal as they are thinner and will slide into the line easier.
