NEVER PAY RETAIL!!! PERIOD!!!

I was a used car salesman years ago (what a "cut-throat business")

Dealers, ALL DEALERS, make much more money on used vehicles than new ones......there's NO MSRP on used vehicles.....

NADA........just a guide to use......don't even bother looking at "RETAIL"...

ALWAYS try to get as close to "average wholesale" as possible.
Car dealers usually will steal a vehicle at trade-in or they "steal" it from a wholesaler which stole it from some other place.

Soooooo........ALWAYS "LOW-BALL" a dealer....private sellers you can pretty much negotiate on the spot.
Give a dealer a low "average wholesale" (trade-in value) offer and let him sit on it for a day or two, if you can't steal from him, move on, there's tons of vehicles around and none of them are selling.

REMEMBER:
A CAR IS ONLY WORTH WHAT YOU CAN GET FOR IT!
Good Luck!

I think that is the key point, if you can do it. I've given a lot of low offers and left the truck on the lot. That's tough when you've found the one your looking for. I've always believed there is another one, and there always was. Sooner of later though they bit on that low offer. I always believed that when I made a low offer the salesman called someone who was hemming and hawing over a higher number and told them I was making an offer so he needed to decide now.

I made $14.5K my offer, and I'll probably go up there and ask him if he wants to sell it or not and go up to $15K and see if he'll even work with me.

Why don't you offer him the $15K and have him throw in a tune-up (including the infamous plug change), oil & filter, or new tires, if needed?
Worth a shot if that's the truck you want, he gets that stuff cheap.

When you do that they pretty much reason you have decided you want this truck and they'll ride you out to maximize what you'll pay. Make sure you go up there one hour before you have an appointment that you cannot miss. Ask him if he'll work with you and mention you have a time limit.

dude, you are in the Austin area and cannot find a truck?

where specifically?
Belton/Temple/Killeen

Waco

New Braunsfuls

Georgetown

trucks are a dime a dozen back home. I'm from Belton myself. Just get onto I-35 and stop by a few dealerships. If you cannot find a nice 2005-2006 F-150 with the options you want I'd be very very surprised.

edit: you are spending too much time on just 1 truck. Find several others in the general price range and style. Bounce the Dealers against each other...btw, the info above is awesome to use. Paying NADA/KBB retail prices is a good way to get butt-raped

I'm in San Marcos and I work in New Braunfels. The next time I have a free day I'm planning on going up and down to the dealerships

I also believe you can actually "steal" a truck much easier from a "private" seller....sometimes they are VERY desparate OR in a real financial crunch.....
whereas a Sales Mgr at a big dealer will stand his ground.

private sellers are losing jobs, money and getting divorces........

i just dont think I can get the financing from a bank... if I could get the financing I'd jump at a private owner

I would go to your bank or credit union and try first. If you go thru a dealer and they run you and see that you are a higher risk.. they are less likely to deal because they know you do not have options.

If you run your credit a couple times in a short period, it does not affect your score much.. they see that you are shopping for loans.

This may not apply to you (several different reasons.. but) If someone can't get financed and you do not have the cash.. then why are you spending 15k on a truck? This is why this country is in the financial crapper.. People wanting things they can not afford.

it wouldn't really be 15K it'd be 5K since i'm putting 5K cash down (probably) and trading in my motorcycle.

and i keep getting denied because they think I don't make enough, but I make MORE than enough, considering student grants and that I don't pay rent, and I work 20 hours a week and make ~$300 a week.

That is a rough spot to be in. The trade on a bike alone is going to hurt you when trying to deal. Good luck and I hope all works out for you.

You are putting DOWN 2/3 and ONLY financing 1/3, I'm flabergasted that a bank won't take that offer........they should approve it if your scenario is as you say....
What's your age?????

And what's the make and year of your bike? Unless it's a HARLEY, depreciation on a METRIC is painful. That's one reason you see tons of HARLEYS on the road, their "resale" value is MUCH higher than any other bike on the road....
I just sold my 2007 Harley Softail DELUXE with "0" (ZERO) loss after riding it for 18 months.

Good Luck with whatever you do!

Sometimes that needs to be said. Then, even worse then pay full price and borrow money at high interest rates because their credit is not good.
