Good intake?

Is the S&B a good intake setup?

Yes, it's a good intake and is tried and true. If you have a 04 or 05 5.4 then you have to have custom tuning before you can safely run the CAI.

Most likely be ok, but not guaranteed. Plus, you don't get but about 50% benefit from the CAI unless you have custom tunes. Your money is far better spent on a tuner if you are going to get only one.

What tuner would you recommend? I really like the S&B intake plus the truck already has a Flowmaster catback exhaust.

Get the Gryphon from PHP. I've got the S&B intake, Roush exhaust, and now waiting on the custom tunes from Bill. My truck was previously tuned to richen things up a bit for the intake, so I'm ok while I wait for the tunes.

Whatever intake you decide on, an enclosed setup is your best bet. S&B is of course as I'm sure you know, and I'm pretty sure Volant is too.

There are two great choices, the Gryphon and the Xcal3. I personally prefer the Gryphon because of the gauges it offers. You can't go wrong with either one.

Will that intake work with my 06 4.6 with the Edge Evo?

You most likely will not have a problem with the 4.6, but always keep in mind, you won't get full benefit without a custom tune.

Don't forget to buy the intake built for the 4.6.

As far as the getting the custom tunes, if you go with PHP, you have to fill out an order form from their site and list all your modifications. First you'll receive the actual programmer unit with just the canned tunes, then you'll download the custom tunes several weeks later.

why is the 04 and 05 need a custom tune "BEFORE" using an CAI? I have an 05 5.4L and I was going to get the CAI first, then the EDGE EVO since I already have a FlowMaster on it.

thanks

There's a 50% chance that your engine will run too lean and cause engine damage. The EDGE won't help this as it's meant for stock trucks. Custom tuning is the only way to resolve this issue.

IMO thats a bunch of crap, have had a CAI about a year before I bought an Edge without any problem at all, about all minor problems I have read on here concerning lean codes were rectified without custom tunes. Are you working for Troyer?

Dude relax. He didn't say every one of them was going to have a problem. Go look at the A/F readouts on trucks that have been dynoed. Look at all the threads about people with 04-05's who get CEL codes that have to do with banks being too lean and other issues.

Just because your particular truck doesn't have the issue, doesn't mean someone elses won't. There are many many issues of those with the 04 and 05 trucks who have this problem.

Odds are if you have those year trucks, you will develop a problem eventually. Maybe not immediately, but its not good for the truck to have a CAI on there with something accomodating for the extra air.

Bottom line is that it has been proven via dyno sheets, SES lights, CEL codes, etc that these trucks DO run lean. Go strap yours on a dyno and get a true wideband output on it and prove us all wrong. I'd love to see it.
