To get mine off, I had to take the air intake piping off and reach in from the top b/c of the way the filter sits and b/c it had been put on by a gorilla when it was serviced last. If you cannot get a wrench to fit it use a screwdriver and then just stab and twist to break it loose.

i never recommend stabbing the filter, it makes a mess and you cant put all that much torque on it. either get a fitting filter wrench or get a strap wrench that is all metal (no rubber lining in the strap)

Here's what I do when I encounter a stuck filter. If you have a strap type filter wrench just take some sandpaper and fold it in half with the grit facing out, put it inside the strap and slide the whole thing onto the filter. This will give more bite and should break it loose. If the sandpaper trick doesn't work then I get out the channel locks and grab the hex portion of the filter, if that doesn't loosen it then it ain't coming off.

My local Autozone has fitted wrenches that fit my OEM filter perfectly. In order to get it off I had to use 16 inches worth of extensions and a universal joint, but it came off without a hitch. If there's no application book, grab a Purolator Pure One PL 24651 filter off a shelf as it's the same size as the factory filter and use it to choose a wrench.
