Transmission issues

From time to time when driving at a relatively slow speed, mainly down city streets or slowly speeding up from a turn, my transmission seems to jump out of gear and the rpms increase then suddenly it will catch and go into gear. Any ideas? 2007 crew cab 2wd with 5.4 and 32000 miles

If you're still under factory warranty you should take it in and have it checked out.

These trans have lots of known issues. They are crap, to put it bluntly. They have clutch packs smaller then some of the ones I have installed on a Harley ! Its rediculous.

Anyways, sounds like you might be having some slippage. Try driving around with OD turned off. This might help, but you need to get checked out by someone who knows auto transmissions. If your still under warranty, go back to dealer. If your on an extended warranty, look for a highly reputable transmission shop. My 2 cents. Hard to say with only an online diagnosis.

I had planned on taking it to the dealer in the next few days. It also has a 100,000 mile powertrain warranty.

Nice ! I had forgot they extended some of their warranty. So, in that case, I'd give your dealer of choice a phone call, setup a time to come in and plan to leave it there. Let them hook up the computer and see whats going on.

are you lifted ? larger tires ? Tow often ? Heavy foot ? anything ?

Correct me if I'm wrong... but he should've bought a manual F150?!

But yup, bring it in for service.

If they would make a manual behind the v8, then hell ya. I would of in a heart beat. Oh well, looks like Dodge is my only real option for a new truck with manual.

Besides a Flowmaster exhaust, stock FX2 and no heavy footing. I grew out of that stage about 8 years ago.

Have you ever had it serviced? A flush costs about $160, definitely cheaper than a new tranny once the warranty expires.

He shouldn't need a flush at 32,000 miles.

Just thought I'd ask. There is such a wide range of drivers on this board, you can never tell. I was just curious.

and you should be doing a full trans flush every 30k (regardless of style of driving. Like I said, these trans are known for being weak, and have no business in a half ton truck. Baby them). New fluid might help, but I would advise going to your dealer, and setting a course of action with them.

Funny since Ford touts the transmission as having a new lifetime automatic transmission fluid that never needs changing.

http://www.ford-trucks.com/specs/2004/2004_f150_2.html (See Enhanced Automatic Transmissions section, a bit down the page)

Only in certain use environments (towing, extended idling, etc.) are transmission fluid changes necessary.

Your truck, your money. I am giving advice, and remember, you get what you pay for.

My truck is far from the only F150 I work on. I have torn apart both the 4r70 and the 4r75. I know how weak this trans are made. Mine blew at 63k. I do tow, have large tires and all that = abuse. But I removed a 4r75 a couple months ago on a 5.4 2wd 2006 model. The trans was toast. This was an older customer, no towing (no hitch) no hauling, just daily grandma style driving. Have you seen your clutch pack ? I honestly laughed the first time I saw it, until I realized I was laughing at my own trans too .

"Lifetime fluid" = 100k fyi. You know why they do this ? There was no huge breakthrough in Mercon V from 02 - now. There are many more reasons behind this "lifetime" fluid, Mercedes does it too. Its so they can advertise lower maintenance costs over the "lifetime" of the truck. Lifetime still means 100k. The "big" company expects the trans to last 100k, then it's R&R, like anything else anymore. Tie rods, drag links, tons of other moving parts no longer have zerk fittings. This doesn't make the grease inside superior to anything we used 10 years ago (heck, the grease we have in the shop is FAR better then what Ford puts in). Anyways, the reason they removed the zerk fittings, is so when they "go bad" you remove and replace (R&R) and that translate to a higher profit margin for "the big company".

I can go on and on. If you want to believe Ford looks out for its customers over its own pocket book, you are on some seriously good things, and should share. Again, your truck, your money, do as you see fit. I am sure you know your truck far better then me, I am just offering friendly advice, from someone who works in the industry.
