So I got an offer today
Personally I'd rather just wait until we return back to the mainland in about 18 months before buying anything. I'd simply rather pay off my motorcycle and last remaining credit card and be debt free when we do go back then adding another car payment right now. We will also be looking for a house when we move back so being debt free will be a good thing for that as well.
I do have to admit though on Friday night my daughter and I were the only ones home and we wanted to go out and get something to eat. I said lets go get something to eat and started looking for my keys and then remembered I don't have a truck any longer.
I think I got a good price for the truck, but man do I miss looking outside and seeing her.

Not sure how the military deals with moving costs, but that's my civilian .02 cents...
My family is from Hawaii and a few years ago, I was going to move back. I remember calling some shippers to ship my 4dr Tahoe and the cost was approaching close to 5k with very strict restrictions (as memory server: I had to drain certain fluids, truck had to be unloaded, no other items could be shipped with it..etc). Anyway getting something when you get back to the mainland is the best idea rather than dealing with the cost of shipping a vehicle or two.

I shipped my SuperCrew F-150 to Hawaii in Nov 2007. Paid $975 through Matson shipping.

Horizon Shipping charges the same amount of money. The shipping regulation is 7ft wide, 21 ft long, 7ft tall...and I think 8,000 lbs...if you exceed those dimensions, then it costs you double.
The current shipping price is $1075 for any vehicle within the size limitations...for anybody.
what you have described is simple misinformation that people here on the Island are always being fed. Nobody questions it, and just simply fork over the cash.
when I pay off my Durango, I'm going to fly to Texas and pick up a truck. Then drive to California and ship it out here...figure I can easily save $5,000 off the price...after shipping it
If you think you want to or need to sell it you better take the 22k and run with it. That is a pretty good price for you with the economy and everything.
Hope you stick around the boards to.

Yeah definitely doesn't cost no $5k to ship a vehicle out here. My buddy just shipped his truck from San Diego and it was $975.
Tylus - Not sure if you're aware of not, but you may be able to get a vehicle out here practically for free if your timing is right. If there's an amphib coming this way at the same time they can load it on there and bring it out, all you pay is the crane fee. My buddy tried doing that, but his timing was off and after waiting 3 months he just paid to ship it out.
Truck actually sold last week for the $22k. Here's a few pics of what we replaced it with. Actually my replacement is the first pic and what I ride everyday and the main reason for me wanting to sell the truck. I ride the bike everyday so the truck practically sat for days/weeks.

Here's what I bought the wife and I kept her 96 Honda accord for my can't ride the bike for whatever reason transportation.

I'll be hangin around the boards though to get my F150 fix.

I bought my wife the Fusion SE 2 years ago and it's still running like a raped ape !! I remember when we 1st got it, I took it out on the interstate and it didn't kick into overdrive until almost 120 mph !! Has almost 70,000 miles on it without one single problem.
As far as the shipping, are you military ? They ship for free don't they ? They used to at least.

1k for shipping...sounds more doable but still if you don't have to spend it, then don't. Not sure why the 5k number sticks in my head - must've been my estimated total moving/storage costs for two containers: vehicle plus household items.
In any event, that was 10 years ago and the job prospects I had out there dried up so I ended up staying put and my estimated costs never went any farther than a few phone calls.

I saw somewhere online that the new 2010 Fusion will get 700 miles off of 1 tank of gas.
It wouldn't surprise me if those were the ratings for the Fusion Hybrid. I believe the numbers where something like 41mpg(city) and 36 (hwy), and they are supposed to have a 17.5 gal tank. Which calcs out to just over 700 miles per tank. I might have to look into one of these for my wife...
That's where I'm at right now. I'm pretty comfortable with the money I make right now (wouldn't mind a little more though) and I am at a point where I am able to help my parents as well as my in-laws. Sometimes I really wonder how people make it these days. I make 3 times the amount my dad makes and he has been with the same company for almost 7 years longer than I have been in the military. They have recently cut him back to 4 days and sometimes even 3 days a week. I sure hopes things turn around soon for my parents sake as well as many others out there struggling in these tough economic times.
