Painting Step Bars

Anyone paint their step bars? I have a red fx4 with the chrome bars. I want black, but not sure how spray paint will hold up. What have you guys used, with what kind of success?

I know one guy had his step bars Line-X'ed. I think that might be cheaper then having them powder coated and it would be easier then having to prep the chrome to be painted on.

I paintedmy black ones red, I sanded, primered, 3 coats of red, 3 coats of clear and wetsanded and they lasted 1 year, they really get beat up, mine looked horrible, linex is probly the most durable option

i painted mine about a year ago and they still look good..

i used a red Scotch Brite pad to scuff them then i painted them with Krylon Fusion.. yes, it sticks very good! i even painted the black plastic step part and still shows no wear, even where i step to get in the truck.. i highly recommend it!

I think the reason your hold up so well is because of the climate. Little to no salt on the roads during the winter really lets paint last longer, the same can't be said for the northern part of the country.

I painted mine about 2 weeks ago. So far the look awesome. We will see how the upcoming winter prevails (if I keep them that long)...

yeah, you are probably right.. the paint probably wouldn't hold up with the road salt/sand in the winter. i guess if they were repainted every year it would work up North.

Up north Line-X would be the best option for perminant painting. Powder coating will do the trick too.

I will be taking mine into have them line-x ed soon.

I was instructed to take a grinding wheel and rough up the chrome so the line x would stick. They are charging me $175.

Did you use any type of coat after the Krylon?
