What to do with truck - opinions please
Hi guys,
I am new to this forum and to my F-150. A week and a half ago, I bought a 2006 Supercrew XLT 4x4. Long story short, i was trying to buy a Toyota Tacoma, but with questionable credit after a divorce a few years ago, i couldn't get approved on one. So i looked around and found my 06.
I financed it at a horrendous rate to show a major loan on my credit which combined with my income and length of time at my job, i should have no problem refinancing it through my bank in about a year.
My questions are concerning the truck itself. It has very high mileage (171,000 kms, 3500 of which i've put on in the last week and a half...that's 106,254 miles). But the thing is, the truck drives and looks like it's a year old. The interior is absolutely mint, the body doesn't have so much as a door ding. It came on a brand new set of Toyo winter tires ($350 a tire). I've driven F-150's with less than half the mileage that don't drive as nice as mine. After spending some serious seat time in it for the first little while, there are no rattles/leaks/drive ability issues that concern me whatsoever other than one minor issue (i'll get to that in a second).
My options are basically:
1. Drive it for a year, refinance it and get it paid off
2. Drive it for a year, trade it in (probably take a loss) on a newer F-150
3. Keep it indefinitely and do the mods that i would want (navigation, stereo, center console, etc)
What kind of longevity are people seeing out of these trucks? Should I be trying to unload it ASAP before it figuratively blows up? Or do i have a solid, reliable vehicle that should be held onto?
I know these are hard hypotheticals to present seeing as how you're not standing in front of my truck, but i thought if anyone would know, it's a bunch of F150 enthusiasts.
I have to say, not getting that Tacoma was a blessing in disguise as i absolutely LOVE my F150. I can't see myself driving anything else.
The one issue? i did a search and came up empty. But basically, when turning from a dead stop (more pronounced turning right) the left front wheel has a very gentle "chatter" almost feels like it's in 4wd and is binding a tiny bit. It makes no noise, and you can only really feel it while driving, not from the passenger seat. Any ideas?
Thanks for reading, hope to hear some stories of quarter million mile trucks!

With that mileage, unless you got one heck of a deal, keep it and pay it off, then MOD it up... But keep a few bucks aside for repairs.
Seems like you drive a bit.. The trade in is going to kill you after a year. Just wait to grab your shorts.. I would say pay it off and run it into the ground...

First off congrats on the truck and welcome to the site
The shudder in the front may be related to the 4wd. I'm not an expert in this arena but I believe I have read on here that the actuators can go bad causing a shudder to be a symptom. Maybe try using the search button and type in some key words like front shudder, actuator, etc.
I would say keep the truck, hang out here and do a lot of reading, and search the classifieds. Always good deals there to mod your truck out.
Have fun with her.

In my opinion a 2006, regardless of miles, is barely broken in. As you describe it she seems to be in great shape and with that mileage was probably used almost entirely on the highway. As someone mentioned, set aside some funds for maintenance and repairs and keep it for another 6 - 8 years. Once paid off, make payments to a car fund and never be in this situation again. They are great trucks.
Thanks for the input guys!
Yeah, i believe the truck was used by a site superintendent or similar position to that. Seems to be primarily highway mileage, the box is scratched but barely used and like i said, the outside is mint.
I did some poking around and the "front end" shudder may actually be the rear. When it does it, you can really tell if its the rear gently locking up or the front resisting, but after reading all about clutch packs, i think that's a possibility. I'm going to do an oil change and a tuneup shortly and i'll do the diffs at the same time and see what kind of shape the rear end oil is in.
Anyway, after more thinking and reading, i think i am going to hold onto this truck. I drive around 35,000 kms (20,000 miles) a year, and would easily mile out a new truck anyway.
Guess it's time to start thinking about mods.......
