cam phaser carnage

look what i found at work today, customer reported knocking and rough running....no doubt. Not the first one i've seen but definatly one of the worst. Cam bolt actually broke, half of it still in camshaft. Peices of chain guide everywhere. 90,000 km, 2005 F150 5.4

What are the signs of a cam phaser going out. Mine has a little rough idle but I think that is due to the plugs needing changing.

Now there's going to be a bunch of posts from people worried about the cam sprocket breaking off. Maybe this can finally replace all the spark plug threads.

+1 I was just thinking about that. I gotta find out some diagnosing for this issue before it becomes a problem.

No doubt.

Of all the 04-08 trucks with cam phasers out there that is the first one I've seen or heard of break off like that. People with half an ounce of common sense will not worry.

Damn Quintin, that's funny.

What most likely happened is the bolt was over torqued when the engine was built and it took this long for the bolt head to pop off.

CLEARLY what happened is there was a noise from the engine... and damage happened....

My truck makes noise in or around the engine Time to schedule a shop appointment I guess, I needed to get my crank shaft stretcher done anyways, so meh. More money out the pocket I suppose.
