Need help getting Ford Emblem off of tailgate
I have a 2006 XLT SCAB 4X4 with the 6.5 foot bed.
I have the delaminating Ford Oval problem described here, front and back: https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...m-failure.html
Given the horror stories on that thread about how the dealers gouged the tailgates, I figured I would fix it myself.
I got new emblems from the dealer. The front came off an went on no problem.
Now I am trying to get the Ford Oval emblem off the tailgate. I did the heat gun and dental floss thing and I can get behind it fine with the dental floss.
Unfortunately, something is still holding it onto the tailgate.
Is it held on by nuts that screw onto the plastic guide pins like the stock grill?
Any advice on how to get this thing off of there without gouging the surrounding paint?
Thanks.

The dealership just pryed mine off. Ended up getting the tailgate repainted to repair the dents all around the emblem. If you pry it off just use something to spread the force accross the sheet metal. It dents easily.
Heat emblem with a heat gun or a hair dryer, then take some good stout fishing line (30 weight) and saw it back and forth. This will work until you hit the alignment pins. After that you'll have room to stick a screwdriver in the there to pry it off.
Thanks guys. Like I said, I did use a heat gun on the emblem and used dental floss instead of fishing line, but I got through to the guide posts on all sides. IDNC76, thanks for the tip about pulling the tailgate apart from the inside, I was going to try that next. Nice to know in advance that it wouldn't get me anywhere.
I am going to try to slip a metal putty knife down in between the guide posts, then ram a screwdriver down between the emblem and putty knife and see if I can pop the thing off. Something is holding those guide posts pretty tight against that tailgate.

report back on how you make out with brutal force lol
worse comes to worse i would just order emblem overlays from PatriotDecals
I'm wondering if there is enough gap to get a heated (very thin) knife
blade behind it to melt off the tabs? Then, once the emblem is off the
tabs could be heated up or drilled out?

just a thought you know where the pins are just grind down at that spot the new oval will cover anything you nick or hit with the grinder just go slow and use blue tape every where you don't want stuff stuck in the paint
A happy ending - with some stupid
I'm happy to say I got the Ford Oval emblem off the tailgate of my 2006 XLT SCAB today and I got the new one on with no dents, dings, or scratches. I'm glad I took the time to do it myself.
Now for the stupid. Last weekend when I first tried to get the emblem off, I told you I was using dental floss and a heat gun. Well, what I didn't realize was that the dental floss was not getting behind the the emblem backing, but it was sliding up between the emblem and the backing. It moved around pretty easily back there but as I said, I couldn't get the emblem off. I kind of thought it was moving around too easily, but never having done this before I figured I was doing the right thing.
Today I looked at things again and realized I hadn't really been sawing the glue backing. So I took mkinttrim's advice and used fishing line and quickly sawed through the glue. I wedged a plastic putty knife down into the middle of the emblem and pried through the glue easily. Then, with the putty knife in place, I took a flat blade screw driver and pried the emblem off. It came off surprisingly easy. There was nothing holding it in place besides the glue. There are 3 guide holes in the tail gate and 3 pins.
The hardest part of the job was getting the old glue off the tailgate so I could get a good bond with the new emblem.
The whole job took a little over an hour once I figured out what I was doing wrong. Boy do I feel stupid about that. I'm posting so somebody else doesn't make the same mistake and damage their tailgate brute forcing the emblem off. I guess dental floss is a bit too thin and slides up into the emblem instead of staying behind it. The oval emblem really does come off quite easily with a heat gun, fishing line, and some patience. And my tailgate is no worse off than it was when I started the job.
The emblem sits in a slight depression on the tailgate, and I was working in my garage last weekend. Today I was working outside in natural light. Even in the sunlight, it is still hard to see where the back of the oval emblem is. Well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
Anyway, all is well that ends well. Thanks for the good advice.
So now I have two fully intact 9 inch Ford oval emlems that are starting to delaminate sitting in my garage. Does anybody want them?
