so I did an oil change late last night an after having to use a chain vice grip to get the filter off (I'll have to thank the last shop I paid to do it)...


turns out I bought the wrong filter. I saw 2 listed for the '04, so took it up to the parts counter, and the guy said the 8a was the one since the 4 something had a note for the heritage. well, it's not 8a, and since i tried spinning the new filter on around 11pm, there was nowhere to go get a new one. I had to put the crushed filter back on, thankfully the chain didn't pierce it.

why ford, why!

between this, and the spark plug fiasco, I'm wondering if ford just wants to mess with regular guys who enjoy doing regular maintenance on their trucks. :lol

I'm not driving the truck today, so I'll have to swap in a new filter tomorrow morning.

I guess I should have just bought both filters.

Maybe this will save someone else some grief in the future.

 

There were two different vehicles in 2004, one was the Heritage which was built using the 5.4 2V prior to job one for the "new body style" that uses the 5.4 3V. Using the phrase "new body style" will, or should tell the sales rep where you purchased your filter that you have the 5.4 3V engine.

 

your truck should use a motorcraft fl 820S, nothing else, they are what is designed for the truck, and motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20

 

There are also 2 motorcraft filters for a 4.6 new body style. If anyone is wondering how to tell. Look it up in the owners manual, it will tell you too look at a sticker on the valve cover to determine which filter is correct for you.

 

There are two fuel filters for the 06. Ask me how I know.

The chain vice grip in the picture is used in the motion picture industry by the grip and electric departments.

The motion picture industry has a lot of strange terms for the equipment that is used. The picture of this particular chain vice grip just happens to be used for rigging purposes. We have to buy these from specialty shops. I thought you might be in the business.

 

nope. I'm in construction. the vise chain works awesome at grabbing pipe, or any unusual shaped item that pliers or wrenches can't.
I had one of those rubber strap wrenches that I tried on the oil filter, but it broke! lol that filter was really on there, so I brought out the big guns.
