4.6 knock at idle

Need some quick advice/thoughts...

I am at 35,900 and have had a knock at idle since new. Always wrote it off as Cam Phasers till I just found out that the 4.6's don't have cam phasers!

Took it to the dealer and they are willing to tear the motor down and try and find the problem. Their best guess is that it's a wrist pin.

So... should I let them tear it down in hopes of finding the problem. knowing full well that there's a good possibility of other things getting scewed up in the processs.

Or leave it and hope for the best, since up until now all it has been is a noise only at idle... and no other problems.

Option 1, Get it fixed. Follow up until its fixed right.
Option 2, wait until it blows then put something blown in its place.

I'm liking option 2!

Yes... purchased 10/06. But I found out that I have a 5 year/60K powertrain warranty that covers it. So I've decided to wait.

After talking further with the tech, it turns out that a lot of 4.6's make this noise (though not as loud) and they have in the past put new short and long blocks in them trying to fix. Most of the time the noise comes back within 6 months. They think mine is louder because it's lifted and the wheel wells are open. So I think it's safer to wait till it's something other than just a noise at idle.

They totally left it up to me as far as the decision whether to tear into it or not. So I don't think they were trying to get out of doing the work.

Ultimately I think I can live with a noise I've had since new, over knowing that my engine was taken out, disassembled, and put back in my truck. Causing who knows what other problems.

Mine runs perfect... just have the knocking at idle. Kinda strange

But, not worth a big teardown and rebuild to me... Not yet anyway.

Hey... Let me know how that Gryphon works out for you.

I took my Edge off when I took it into the dealer and it just reminded me how great that thing is. Man what a turd my truck is without it.

If there's even more power to be had with the Gryphon, that would be great.

Funny, my friend mentioned something about my knock at idle today. It's been there since new also and it really doesn't bother me.

My truck does idle really rough though and it won't go away, could it be related?

Has it idled rough since new also?

My first trip back back to the dealer was for a leaking o-ring on my fuel rail. About 100 miles on the odometer at that point.

One of the symtoms was rough idle, but I could also smell fuel.

After that was fixed though, it's run perfectly ever since.
