Exhaust or Gears? What would you do?

It's tax season and I'm getting a substantial amount back. I'm thinking about either putting a new full exhaust system on or changing the gears.

Exhaust would be dynatech long tubes w/ high flow cats and magnaflow cat-back. Not sure about which cat back, open to suggestions but I know I want the magnaflow. Probably order from Troyer.

If I do gears I'm thinking 4.56's but I'd love to hear opinions with reasons for other ratios. Don't know much about whats out there for gears so I'm open to suggestions as far as brands.

current mods are listed in signature. thanks in advance for the help/advice/opinions.

Exhaust, I wouldn't bother with gears until you run 35s or bigger, IMO.

i would do gears if you ever plan to go bigger. 4.56's and 33's would hurt your mpg, but you could pull with ease. otherwise get get exhaust.

gears, exhaust doesnt give near the change that gears will, I wish I would have saved money for gears instead of getting some other things

I say go with the gears.

4.56 w/ 33's would be a lot of fun, unless you do a lot of highway driving.

Exhaust. Gears are only neccessary with lifts and larger wheels & tires.

gears gears gears

you will effectively be wasting your money on Longtubes and a full exhaust in terms of performance unless you are running a blown induction setup

the gears on the otherhand offer instant out the box performance, and they will be a huge supporting mod for anything else you do for the truck.

btw, with longtubes, you also will have to get custom tuning done. the O2 sensors will be repositioned and the pulse time must be corrected for.

supercharged engines respond better to intake mods than exhaust mods, N/A engines on the other hand respond well to exhaust mods

If you do alot of city driving or alot of towing do the gears. But if you are on the highway a fair amount then 4.56's will probably be too much gear, IMO. You could just do a custom true dual set-up, keeping the stock cats and manifolds. That would be a better set-up than the LT's and high flow cats on a basically stock truck. Otherwise I would either save for a lift, maybe a supercharger, or just put the money in the bank for a rainy day.

Already running Troyer tunes and planning to try JBA once I do this.

sounds like gears is the popular choice.

I was thinking 4.56's because I do eventually want to run 35's. Would 4.10's be better with 33's? When I do step up to 35's am I gonna regret the 4.10's?

true..but it'll cost about $1,500 or so for the LT and exhaust for about 10-15 HP gain

the gears on the otherhand will give a "percieved gain" of about 20-30 hp...and is roughly the same $$$...and the low speed in town driving will be a ton of fun

dollar for dollar, best bang for the buck is gears on any truck here...unless you go blown

yes

the jump from 3.55/3.73 isn't much of a difference. you will notice a definate improvement, but the 4.56 would be a better choice IMO...especially as the 35" tires you want will be perfectly suited by the 4.56
