Remember, a slight whining from the Transfer Case while in 4WD is quite normal. It's when you start hearing the teeth grinding themselves into oblivion on your IWEs that you need to worry.

hi all, i have been reading over this thread for a few weeks now.... i had my 04 screw to a local shop that cant figure this noise out..... i get a clicking noise when accelerating between approx 20 to 35 mph then it goes away? wont do it in neutral only under load.
seems to be coming from the right frt. wheel. i have ruled out eng. noise...( removed drive belt and still had the noise ) this will happen in 2wd as well as 4wd high ?
don't want to take it to the stealership but locals cant pinpoint it? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah, thanks for all the info.
It was a breeze, ended up being the solenoid and not the IWE itself, but it needed to be replaced either way. Not sure if I'll go ahead and do the other (passenger) side, or just leave it be.

my buddy and i did this repair up at his shop over the weekend. took us a total of about 65 mins to replace the drivers side actuator and the vacuum line that went to the actuators themselves.

after performing the leak down test it was clear what parts were faulty and what needed to be replaced. got my actuator from tasca parts and used some vacuum lines laying around the shop.

total cost of repair, approx $100 for the parts (rush shipping) and $0 in labor as we did the repair ourselves. nothing to it. so glad the dreaded grinding noise is gone and my 4wheel drive is working like a champ.

Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
Sincerely,
Milt IV

I haven't been around for a while but still get emails from this thread. I'm glad this is still helping guys out. I have updated the file location because my current server location is going away, so if you have any problems with downloading any of the files, just let me know. Also, I have added another that I didn't realize I had. It's the "Diagnosis and Testing" pdf, noted at the bottom of the very first post on page one.

Keep turning those wrenches and saving those dollars!

Very imformative thread!
I have a similar issue on my 08 F150 SCREW 4X4 with 60K miles.

For the last 2 days, when driving under 35mph, I got a very loud noise like grinding from the front of the truck.
It sounded like a dragging brake pad.
I felt a vibration in the steering wheel.
As I slowed to a stop, the noise quit and didn't come back.
A few miles later, I was turning left from a stop and it started this dragging/vibration noise again. I hit the brakes and slowed to about 10mph and it went away.
For 2 days nothing.
This morning as I was coming to a stop from 35mph, it started dragging/vibrating again. After I stopped it went away.
I moved the steering wheel from left to right as it was dragging/vibrating and no change.
Only when I stopped moving did the noise stop.
Drove 30 minutes and no other occurrences.

I raised the truck and took the front wheels off to inspect the brakes.
Brake pads were fine.
No visual problems found.

HOWEVER - When I tried to spin each front wheel, the entire axle assembly was moving (not Free-spinning).

Does this mean that my solenoid is bad?
Any suggestions are appreciated before I start buying parts I may not need!

Thanks!
Ryan

Hard to say if this is the IWE making the noise but when the engine is off, the IWE will engage and the front wheels will essentially be locked to the axles. This is normal. The noise on the other hand would require a little more diagnosing to say for sure.

For the last 3 days i heard a noise comming from the driver side wheel. Put in 4hi noise is gone.I have good vaccum going to the solenoid. With the truck running i pulled the vac hose on the passenger side and it had strong vac to the hub,i pulled the vac line on the driver side hub and hardley any vac in that line going to that hub. I narrowed it down to a bad vac line to the driver side hub or the solenoid is bad. No water was present in the lines at this time. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help Russ

Sorry to everyone who couldn't get the pdfs from page one. I thought I had that fixed months ago but now it really is. I think part of thje issue is, this thread has been split off into two separate threads and I fixed the links in one and it must not have fixed it in the other. Can an admin merge these two so the info is up to date consistantly?

If you have any issues getting the pdfs, just drop me a PM and I'll check on it.

Thanks

TN
