4.10

i'm looking for some 4.10 gears for my truck. i have an '08' f-150 screw. i have the motive gears in there now, and they whine real bad. i have had them redone 3 different times, and they still whine any help would be great. two different shops installed them, and the same result. both shops are saying the gears are bad.

it's either the gears, or the first shop did the install so badly that your axle shafts got eaten up also

8.8 or 9.75 axle?

Ford Racing has them on their site for the 8.8...didn't see the 9.75 on there

How would the axle shafts get eaten up?

The gears could be ruined by a crappy first install. If that's the case, nothing will stop the whining.

You had gears put on an '08? Why?

the axle shafts extend from the axle tubes into the pumpkin and mesh with the gears to propel the truck right?

that section of the shaft could have the teeth damaged...or maybe installation crap scored the axle shaft...any number of things can happen.

there is a reason you shouldn't do gears yourself, or let anybody but an expert touch 'em

but yeah, if the first install fubar'd the gears, it won't matter who does the install. Most likely you'll need new gears and a shop who actually knows what they're doing

Gear Whine is never normal. anybody who tries to tell you that is blowing smoke up your a**. gears setup properly make no more noise than OEM gears...virtually none

I was in the same boat but I kept my 4.10's on the 3rd set. My first set I had Motive 4.10's and then had them replaced with another set. Both whined so I went to Ford Racing 4.10's which the guy told me when he pulled my Motive's off and compared them that they were the exact same thing. I'm thinking 4.10's just aren't meant for an F-150. I also had two different shops install them so it wasn't the same one. My gears don't really whine per-se but it creates a horrible driveline whine between 40-45 & 81+. I believe the second shop did a correct install. The guy spent a ridiculous amount of time explaining everything about lash, setup, etc. and ordered new OEM shims and stuff from the previous install. The drivetrain whine was only slightly less on the third set so I finally just gave up. I just cruise at 80 on the highway anymore. Still bugs me at times but for the most part I'm over it.

There are other people who have complained about 4.10 gear whine before. I've seen plenty of posts about this over the years but you'll always get the people saying it's "not normal". I would advise a 4.30 over a 4.10

Nope. The axle shafts do NOT mesh with the ring and pinion. They don't directly touch the ring and pinion at all, and the shafts don't have "teeth", they have splines. The splines on the shafts engage the side gears of the differential case, but not the ring and pinion.

splines or teeth...same thing

I was trying to get across that a bad ring/pinion setup can damage components...and especially if they are wearing badly and throwing out bits/pieces of metal. a defect occuring on the ring will transfer to the spider gears and so on...gets a little bit less with each progressive transfer

off-topic...but how many splines are the rear axleshafts in the 9.75 axle? 31 or 28?

Neither. It has 34 splines.

Saying 4.10's aren't for a certain rear end is dumb. Never had a problem with a great gear guy and Yukons.

What size tires do you have? Yukons are a good choice.

Well, I've heard far more bad than good about 4.10's. Whenever I see threads about gear whine they are always about 4.10 ratio. I haven't seen anyone else complain about another gear so I wouldn't recommend 4.10's based on that. I've had 3 sets, this guy has had 3 sets, I've seen plenty of other members complain about the same issue and always with 4.10's.

I have 4.10's in my 2007 Mustang GT/CS & I install them @ my friends shop with his help & no whine or nothing at all. It's the installer, I've heard the same thing from people I met or from Mustang Forums about Motive Gears & people that complain about them are wrong they are just as good as Ford Racing + alot cheaper too.I installed mine over a year ago & still absolutely no whine or noise at all.

Your install guy's are probabaly setting them up too tight.

Next time they are apart take a pic of the pattern on the ring and post it up.

I agree it's the installation that causes the whine, not 4.10 technology. I have Precision Gears and haven't had a problem with them.
