04 5.4L cam failure

Hey, guys I just found this site. Father inlaw has 5.4L 3 valve lost a roller on rear intake valve cyl #2. Hope this is not common, due to the fact I have a 2000 model 5.4L. Well went to help him today and the book says to depess the valves and remove rocker/rollers at certain crank position before removing camshaft. Is this the only way, cause the tool to do this with is $200.00. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Chris

You can walk the cam off slowly by going through the caps one by one and losening it. Once you replace the parts, walk the cam back down. It was my fathers truck. While I worked the bearing caps for the cam, my father held on to the cam phaser and kept tension on the chain.

Its all pretty straight forward and only a few hand tools are needed. A low torque wrench is also requried. One other tip, clean all the dirt from the top of the valve cover because it likes to fall in the engine.

Do a search for some of my posts. I got a lot of good help advice and I added the info that I had.

I found the valve spring compression tool on ebay for $60. It was used and in very good condition. Its tricky to find. I couldnt find the wedge tool.

BTW the 04 and 01 have different valvetrain.

I bought the valve spring compressor and timing chain wedge from http://www.fordspecialtools.com. Here's what I paid...

PN 303-1175 Locking Tool, Timing Chain $90.38 ea
PN 303-1039 Compressor, Valve Spring $147.73 ea

Go to tasca ford for parts (http://www.tascafordparts.com)

the camshaft caps do require a low torque that you'll need a in-lb torque wrench that goes below 100 in-lb.

Also, the camshaft phasers have a one-time use torque-to-yield bolt. You'll need to buy a new one to re-install the phasers (a few bucks from the dealer or tasca).

Never even heard of this. Not common, that's for sure.
