Do all 5.4L's sound like a quiet diesel at idle?
Update:
I spoke with a Ford master tech, who happens to be a cousin, about my noise, on the phone tonight. It appears that I might just be overly critical of this 'new to me' truck. My subtle, dieseling idle sound, is not really detectable at the front of the cam cover, where a bad phaser will normally be heard. Mine, instead, appears to be more easily heard at the bottom of the exhaust manifolds, and cat system (near wheel wells and under the rear of the engine). This suggests possibly that the noise is a normal characteristic of the engine, resonating through the front part of the exhaust system. Another possibility, is a rattling of the innards of one of the cats. Again, my sound is very quiet, and absolutely not audible from the cab when the windows are up. Its definitely not a hard 'knock' or 'thump' as some describe with a bad phaser. Its more of a light clatter, like a few marbles being jarbled around rythmicly, in a glass jar. I am going to drive it over to him tomorrow or the next day, so he can evaluate the noise, just to be sure.
Also, for others reading about phasers, and wondering what they sound like, here is a post I made in another thread, with a link to a video clip, that was posted on an older thread, by another member:
"Go here: http://www.flatratetech.com/
and click the "video" tab at the top, and watch video number 22. It is long, and has some recordings of injector sounds, lash adjusters, a chain adjuster leak down startup, and good and bad cam phasers. The cam phaser recording is at 14:20, but start watching around 13:35 for some useful info on determining if the phasers are making the sound you are hearing. They show a recording in sequence of good-bad-and back to good phaser sound in about a 10 sec recording."

RUSS04, I have no good answer for you. The guys in the video aren't very clear on whether this startup noise can be a problem or not. My 2002 4.0L Explorer has had a nasty startup racket for the past 40,000 miles, and it runs like a top.
My 5.4L is back at the dealer, for a front bumper re-paint, and a listen to the engine again. I should hear back by Friday. I again, voiced my concern about the ticky tappy idle sound from the passenger side, and they are gonna give it another listen. I am sure the outcome will be that it is a normal sound. Maybe it is. I am cool with that, as long as something doesn't explode in the next 100,000 miles.

Mine has done it since I owned it. Since I got exhaust I dont hear it too much unless I walk up to the front and listen sharply. Cam Phasers. 68k miles, bought the truck at 61k, as it gets up there in miles I will probably look more into it and have it fixed.
Thanks JIMBO45 & DARRENWS6 For your help The start-up rattle does not happen all of the time I just wanted a solid answear on what would cause this to happen at such low miles on the motor I have a ford esp but iam not going to pay a $100.00 and they tell me its normal
I guess i will be looking at a 2010 F150 to replace my 04

my 04 motor sounded like a diesel that wasn't gettin oil. Noticeable TICK TICK TICK TICK. Could hear it like 20 ft. from the truck.
The new 08 has the common diesel sound that all 5.4's have but no nasty noises. My 04 sounded "sick" the 08 sounds "healthy"

My 2006 FX4 5.4l is in right now for a warranty visit and I have them diagnosing the same type of concern. When first started up in cooler weather, there is a noticable klunking sound (passenger side wheel well) that becomes very audible shortly after the first start of the morning. Right after the engine idles down to normal rpm the sound becomes very noticable. It sounds like more than just tapping or clatter but rather a deeper klunking sound. Once warmed up the klunking is gone and replaced by an overall "diesel type"sound.
Anyone know what this could be, should I be concerned or just accept it's just the engines normal sound. I can live with a little noise, but if it is the first step towards a major engine problem, I want it corrected now.

Yeah that is how mine was when they told me ford forgot to put a spacer on the crack shaft. Got a new motor out of ford after a 28 day backorder wait. now i have about 15,000 miles on it now with 13 on the motor runs great and still sound like a diesel.
Yup. My '08 sounds healthy. I've asked some friends and co-workers who are fairly adept when it comes to vehicles and they all agree it sounds like a "quite diesel".
I'm ok with that!

Update:
I just got it back from the dealer. They have treated me right this time, as they always have; I have purchased my last three Fords from them. When they had it in for an interior cleaning, they noticed a tiny paint flaw on the front bumper valance, and wanted to repaint the valance, without me even asking!!! Well, when I dropped it off for that appointment, I asked if they could really take another listen to the engine for me. They wrote up a service check order for it, and gave me a loaner.
I got it back this morning, and the valance looked great! They really checked the engine over, and reported that it is just fine, and the sound is normal. I was also told that trucks of my build date and later, don't suffer from phaser issues. I tend to believe that, in that I haven't seen that many folks with '06's and on, with this problem. Also, hearing all you guys' replies about having a bit of 'healthy' noise on newer ones is reassuring. Thanks! I am overly **** about maintenance and preventative maintenance, which probably contributed to my paranoia over this slight noise.
Again, I am not saying your truck should knock and rattle as loud as a diesel, but I am convinced that the very quiet hot idle 'whirring' IS a normal characteristic of this engine. Mine is so slight, that I need to almost climb under the engine to even hear it. And now that I have accepted the noise, I kind of like it! I guess it could be considered a 'healthy' noise!
I have listened to the two online vids of bad phasers, that I could find, and mine is NOT that noise, nor is mine even close to as loud as those. Completely different, and I am not worried about it anymore.
Thanks for all your help, reassurance, and input on this matter. I hope this thread will ease others' concerns with the normal "very quiet diesel" idle.

Oh, and you guys with the serious startup noise, that is altogether a different issue, and NOT a cam phaser problem.

I've owned 4 trucks in my lifetime, and 3 of them sounded like diesels at idle. what gives. My b2200 had a horrible top end that must have been on the verge of blowing cause it would clank and click for 10 minutes until it was warm. My ranger always sounded like a gas motor, my b4000 had a strange rattle clank noise at idle, and now my f-150 sounds a bit off as well.
One day I'll just buy a diesel so that nobody will have to ask...

engine rattle diesel sound at idle
hey guys! just to add to the list I've got a August 04 build F-150 (2004) and it has the diesel engine sound when idle and has since I drove it off the lot with 3 miles on it. I've got about 87k on it now and it still runs great. I'm on here now trying to figure out what's up with a noise I get on acceleration, a vibration. My guess is exhaust. Anyway, I have that noise and then on really cold (18 F or less) I'll have clatter for about 2-3 seconds on start since the oil is colder, but that's about it. y'all have a great week.

That first one sounds real ugly unlike anything I have ever heard from under my hood. In over 100,000 miles I have used and abused my accelerator pedal for tanks of gas at a time and never used oil, never had bad mileage (under the circumstances) and always started up on the first key turn.
After your vids, I wont worry for another 100,000 miles unless I do the turbo or blower thing.
Mine has that diesel "knock" sound and it has 42000 miles on it. It's the same sound it had at 100 miles.
Roushcharged. No issues. I don't even want them to touch this thing. It runs fast, smooth, and downright great!
