Unhappy Scratched + Dented Tailgate

So this morning i scratched and dented my tailgate. I was backing up my truck so i could hook a friends trailer on, and while he was waving me to stop, the trailer slipped out of his hand and i could not stop quick enough. The trailer raised up (decent size boat on it) and smacked right into my truck.

Does anyone have any idea from looking at these pictures if this is something that could be easily fixed by a body shop? Or would i need a whole new tailgate? And if it is something that can be fixed, what do you think it would cost?

I'm going to try and find someone who can take a look at it and give me an estimate, but i wanted to see what you guys had to say first. I'm hoping maybe somebody on here has had to fix there tailgate before or has experience with this and can tell me what to expect.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Not a big deal. Take the tailgate off, and bring it to any paint shop. It will take them a day or two to fix it. No time lost on keeping the truck in the body shop.

Really, if it was me, I wouldn't care... it's just a tailgate. Heck, I stabbed mine with a shovel and put a dent in it a couple months ago because I didn't like how my work was coming out doing some small landscape stuff. Wasn't my truck's fault though... had to take it out somewhere.

we just paid $250 to have my sisters re-painted. i would assume about $300-$350 to repair and repaint yours.

Find a good body shop. Since the dent caught part of the raised lip, they probably need to repaint the entire gate rather than blend. If money is burning a hole in your pocket, you can remove the F150 badge and have them fill the holes while they're at it!

Cost to fix a deep scratch in my drivers door (no dent) was ~$550. If money is tight, as it always is, try a pick-a-part...you might get lucky.

Beyond what every one else stated, if he let go of the tongue and it rose up, then he has a problem with tongue weight on that trailer which could make it dangerous to drive, especially over about 45mph. Too light or too heavy a tongue weight will cause a trailer to sway. I have seen what happens to mis-loaded trailers when the trailer takes control of the vehicle towing. It's not pretty.
Tongue weight on a boat should be 8-15% of towed weight.

just an excuse to shave your tailgate now. But you can just fill the dents and blend the lower portion, unless I'm missing another dent above that body line? Easy fix and should be cheap, but if not look into shaving it.

You have issues dude, its not cool to destroy your truck for no reason

To the OP: It shouldnt be more than 150-200 or so to get that fixed and reprayed. I have a 2 dents bigger than that and a few smaller dents from idiots at work on mine and I was quoted at 150 to fix it at a reputable body shop. Plan on doing it soon

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.
Oh and yeah thats the only place that i have dents, none above the body line.

A guy at work tonight made a suggestion. Get some sort of black panel to cover the whole lower half of the tailgate below that line, considering i have a lot of black on my truck already. All though i'm not sure how that would work, what to use, or how it would look.

I'll definetly keep my options open for now. I'll go around and see what some auto body shops say, and if it get crazy prices i'll perhaps looking into finding another tailgate.

His boat and trailer are pretty much on their last season right now anyways, he's buying a new setup for next year. We actually still took the boat out today though, and about a half mile out the thing started to take on water. We didn't realize it at first, because it took a little bit of time for the water to fill up underneath before it started leaking from the deck. Come to find out there was a decent size whole in the bottom of his boat, which was not there last week when we took it out. So we both had a bad day...my truck.... his boat.....and he had a good chunk of his finger taken out when the trailer slipped into my truck, because he tried to stop it.

Such is life sometimes, what can ya do i guess. I haven't had a bad day in awhile so i guess i had one coming....
