Just like the title says What are cam phasers and what exactly do they do and what may cause them to go bad?

My 05 is in the shop getting them replaced and I just wanted to know the above information.

They phase the cams!
DUH

actually I had no idea... but Wikipedia knows...
apparently it has to do with adjusting the timing...

Variable cam phasing changes the timing of the valve lift event. It can be used to shift the intake cam, the exhaust cam, or both on dual overhead cam engines. This helps increase engine efficiency, improving idle stability while delivering more torque and horsepower. It also helps boost fuel economy and reduces hydrocarbon emissions.
It works by using oil pressure, gear teeth, and a spring. If the valve that controls oil pressure to the cam phaser fails then the unit will not function correctly.

It's a spring loaded gear on front of the camshaft. A solenoid mounted in the cylinder head (the connector that sticks out through the front of the valve cover) is controlled by the PCM and allows or restricts engine oil flow through the phaser, which locks it up and advances or retards the cam timing as the PCM sees fit.

I had a startup rattle that has been progressingly getting worse and i took it in under the factory warranty but seemingly the noise was "normal". Now at 40 K i had them look at it again and the tech described the noise as "awful". Go figure. Anyways my ESP covered it. Just aggravaiting
