Has anyone really installed 2WD front shocks in a 4WD. I would like conformation before I buy 2WD shocks. Sorry to hi jack thread.

I don't understand how changing only the front shocks can lower the front (or raise it) and the shocks will still work. They have to extend and compress to work. The springs hold it up and set the ride height - right?!

4x4 shocks have the lower perch about 1" higher up the shock housing

4x2 shocks will make the front sit lower since the lower perch is that 1" lower

and you re-use the springs. they are the same with 4x2 and 4x4

not to hi-jack this thread, but could i feasibly do the opposite to lift my 2wd? Could i get a lift out of 4wd shocks and keep the stock 2wd spring?

There are threads in the suspension forum discussing doing just that, raising a 4x2 to 4wd height. That's really more common. That's where I got the idea from when I saw how easy it was to raise it.

I went with the Roush Performance 4X4 Full suspension kit to lower my FX4 two years ago. The kit included front and rear shocks, a blue stabilizer bar to improve cornering and handling, front coil springs, and rear leaf springs. It dropped my FX4 2” in the front and 3” in the rear. I decided to go with the Roush kit because of three reasons: 1) I decided that I wanted to turn my FX4 into a performance truck, so it was time to ditch the factory FX4 suspension and lower my truck for better performance and handling. 2) The Roush kit included everything in one package, so I didn’t need to do any more shopping to get everything together. 3) I had driven a Roushcharged F150 when they came out a few years ago, and the handling and feel of the truck’s suspension was pretty good. Although the full kit isn’t the cheapest, I would still recommend it. I bought my kit via Woodhouse for about $1100 two years ago.

yes...same springs in 4x4 and 4x2

4x4 shocks + a spacer and you'll sit the same hieght as my FX4 is leveled

do a search. we had a good 3 or 4 page thread within the last month or so about lifting a 4x2 using a spacer and 4x4 shocks

Nice! Thanks for the info, i will search for that thread.

I've been going back and forth weather or not i should lift my truck or level it. I know everyone will say 4x2 = low 4x4 = lift.. does not help me though. I came from the world of desert racing and 90% of the "pre-runners" are 2wd.

I personally wouldn't lower a 4x4, or lift a 4x2...but that is me. I'm a rather firm subscriber of the 4x2=low and 4x4=high theory.

that's just me though. your truck, your money...have fun

search for wxscpo. he has a 05 4x2 that is lifted on 35's. looks alot better than most 4x4's on the site. he can tell you the good/bad of the 4x2 lifted.

lots of guys have done the leveling kit (4x2 or 4x4). they do a great job and are very very cheap compared to a lift.

First step is to remove the rear blocks and replace the u-bolts with 2wd bolts.

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...07&catalogid=2

Make sure you buy the standard duty ones, the heavy duty bolts are thicker and will not fit. You will need 4 of them.

Second, get yourself a set of 2wd shocks, the fronts are 1" lower and the rears are shorter so you won't bottom out the shocks after you lower.

Finally, get a set of 2" rear drop shackles. Removing the rear blocks will give you a 1.5" rear drop, the shackles will give you another 1.5" drop, and the front shocks will give you a 1" drop in the front. Then you will have a 1/3 drop and sit just like a leveled 2wd.

Here is the thread when I lowered mine

https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...eekend+project

The first pics were with a 3/3 drop, I've since brought the front back up. The pics at the end of the thread were with a 2/3 drop. I've recently gone up again and now I'm at a 1/3 drop and I sit perfectly level, I have exactly 36" from the flare lip to the grond on all 4 corners.
I've got two bilstein 4x2 rear shocks here, and ordered four Tasca 4x2 U-bolts. I don't think I'll do rear drop shackles.

You should be fine, and with the 2wd shocks you can go lower if want to.

Today I put the 4x2 shocks on. Later this week I'll remove the block. I'll paint the parts while I have it apart.

Would it be possible to get a die and add more threads to the 4x4 u-bolts and reuse them?

Can't you just cut the front coils and lower the front that way?
